Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit :

UNCG Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) is ranked one of the top HDFS graduate programs in the country. As one of nine departments within the School of Health and Human Sciences, HDFS is a highly collaborative, student-centered, and research-oriented department that values interdisciplinary scholarship. Our work is centered around developmental and family science approaches to examining multi-level processes across the individual, interpersonal, and contextual levels. The rich racial and ethnic diversity of the North Carolina Piedmont Triad provides a wealth of opportunities to engage in research with a wide range of children, adults, families, and communities, including immigrant and refugee populations. Embedded within the departmental core values of Inclusion, Integrity, Community, and Intentionality is a deep commitment to inclusive practices and a collegial, generative environment. The department has 22 full-time faculty, over 350 undergraduate majors, and approximately 100 graduate students in MEd, MS, and PhD programs.

Position Summary :

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies invites applications for two 9-month tenure-track appointments at the Assistant Professor level, starting August 2026. We seek dynamic and collegial scholars with demonstrated potential of research productivity, high-quality teaching, and intentional service. We encourage applications from candidates specializing in any area of Developmental or Family Science who will complement and expand our current departmental strengths in human development, family science, sociocultural contexts, or young children’s early care and education. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests are interdisciplinary, sensitive to context, and / or focused on developmental or family processes. We value quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and community engaged scholarship. Candidates should articulate a clear research program and the potential to secure external funding. All applicants should have a clear commitment to teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and be able to provide rich research experiences for students.

These positions will involve a) maintaining an active and productive research program, b) undergraduate and graduate teaching, c) advising undergraduate and graduate students, d) seeking external research funding, and e) providing professional and institutional service. Candidates with scholarly expertise relevant to diverse populations are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong record of research achievement in developmental science or family science, enthusiasm for teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and competencies in teaching and mentoring individuals from varied backgrounds in support of student success.

Minimum Qualifications :

• Doctoral degree in the field of Human Development and Family Studies or a closely related field such as Psychology, Sociology, Education, Biobehavioral Health, or Public Health.
• Evidence of competence in college instruction.
• Record of scholarly publication and competence in related research methodology.
• Strong potential to obtain external funding for research.
