Job Description

Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

An opportunity is available for an Educational Interpreter (ASL) to support a Kindergarten student in a 1 : 1 setting at a well-established elementary school near State College, PA. This role is ideal for someone experienced in working with young children who are deaf or hard of hearing and familiar with cochlear implants and early sign language intervention.

Location : Elementary school approximately 20 minutes from Penn State University and about an hour from Harrisburg, PA.

Duration : Full school year contract, fully onsite.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide 1 : 1 ASL interpretation services for a fully deaf Kindergarten student with cochlear implants.
  • Facilitate munication between the student and educators to support academic and social engagement.
  • Collaborate with another onsite interpreter supporting a 2nd grade student for guidance and resource sharing.
  • Adapt munication methods in alignment with the students previous early intervention experience.

Qualifications & Desired Experience :

  • Proven proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in educational settings.
  • Experience working with children in early elementary grades (K-5), preferably with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Knowledge of cochlear implants and munication strategies for children transitioning from early intervention to elementary school.
  • Strong teamwork skills for collaboration with onsite staff and other interpreters.
