About the Opportunity

Meridian Contracting is a self-performing heavy civil contractor supporting complex infrastructure, mining, and utility projects across Arizona and New Mexico. From deep trench utilities to mass earthwork and mine site development, our civil operations are the foundation of Meridian’s growth.

We’re seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Superintendent to lead field operations on large-scale grading, utility, and mining projects. This role is critical in driving safety, quality, and production while leading crews with integrity, communication, and a deep sense of ownership.

✅ Successful Team Members in This Role Will…

  • Lead daily field operations for earthwork, pipe, and utility crews across civil and mining projects.
  • Build and maintain detailed 3-week look-ahead schedules , coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials.
  • Interpret plans, specs, and production targets to drive on-time, in-tolerance completion.
  • Supervise and mentor foremen, operators, and laborers with a focus on teamwork and accountability.
  • Monitor trench, pipe, and excavation safety (OSHA, MSHA, trench protection, and fall prevention).
  • Coordinate with survey, QC, and project management to verify grade, line, and depth.
  • Manage subcontractors for paving, concrete, and specialty scopes — ensuring alignment with the plan.
  • Lead daily tailgate safety huddles and embed a proactive safety mindset in every task.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers to track progress, resolve conflicts, and report field metrics.
  • Represent Meridian professionally on owner and client sites with clear, solutions-driven communication.

A Day in the Life of a Heavy Civil Superintendent :

  • Start with a pre-shift safety and production meeting, reviewing trench and traffic plans.
  • Walk the work with your foremen, check cut / fill areas, pipe layouts, and utility crossings.
  • Confirm production goals — cubic yards, footage, or pipe installations — and assign equipment resources.
  • Track daily quantities and identify any schedule impacts early.
  • Work directly with clients or inspectors to maintain transparency and resolve issues proactively.
  • End the day verifying progress, reviewing next-day needs, and updating the 3-week look-ahead.
  • Measurements of Success :

  • Projects delivered safely, on schedule, and within tolerance.
  • Crews engaged and producing to plan — high morale, low turnover.
  • Positive owner feedback and repeat project awards.
  • Accurate reporting and transparent communication with project teams.
  • Minimal rework or schedule loss due to proactive field leadership.
  • Qualifications :

  • Minimum 5 + years of experience in heavy civil or mining construction, including leadership of pipe or earthwork crews.
  • Proven success delivering utilities, grading, roadway, or mine infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of cut / fill balance, haul cycles, and trench safety.
  • OSHA 30 and MSHA Blue Card (required or ability to obtain prior to hire).
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, production reports, and survey data.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and multiple field operations simultaneously.
  • Solid communication and leadership skills — hands-on, team-oriented, and solutions-driven.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to regional job sites.
  • Why Meridian?
