The role of a Medical Assistant is to demonstrate the ability to recognize urgent / emergent needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed. They must function within various payor regulations and follow clinic procedures for the organization and management of the electronic medical record. They facilitate interdisciplinary communication and utilize other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyzing patient data. The Medical Assistant assesses learning needs of the patient and significant others, gives accurate and complete information to patient and family, and evaluates patient and family understanding of treatment plan and / or instructions.
They assist with a variety of procedures, exams, and operation of diagnostic equipment as assigned, maintain appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures, and medications administered, and accurately document all patient interactions in electronic medical record. They report results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members, function according to limitations or scope of license or certification, and perform basic medical assistant functions under direction and supervision of provider. They maintain the professional appearance of patient exam and procedure rooms and maintain supplies in assigned area.
Marginal functions include cross coverage in other clinic areas as team needs, following equipment maintenance protocol, identifying problems, and coordinating appropriate repairs, and participating in Performance Improvement projects.
Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required include successful completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant certification, clinic / physician office experience preferred, Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider certification, and proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served.
