Utilities Electrical Technician
This classification involves skilled journey level work installing, maintaining, and repairing both high and low voltage electrical / electronic systems found in City water and sewage treatment plants and pumping systems. An employee in this position repairs electrical / electronic components; conducts preventative maintenance; disassembles and reassembles electrical equipment; uses various meter and ground testing equipment; interprets diagrams; conducts thermos scans; and maintains related records. This position also orders repair parts; sets up generators for City functions; and responds to emergency calls.
Essential job functions include :
- Installs, alters, repairs, and maintains both high and low voltage motors, generators, switchgear, motor controllers, transformers, wiring system electronic components, and other related equipment.
- Checks electrical ladder diagrams for repairs on electrical equipment.
- Performs electrical connections and disconnects.
- Conducts thermos scans.
- Installs FVD in water and waste plants.
- Maintains accurate records of the maintenance and repair history of electrical equipment on which work is performed.
- Orders parts for repairs.
- Sets up generators for City functions.
- Responds to emergency calls.
- Performs related work as required.
Education requirements include :
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED equivalency diploma.Completion of an apprenticeship program as an electrician and attainment of journeyman rank.Experience requirements include :
Reasonable progressively responsible experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of water, sewer, and reuse treatment plant instrumentation / electronics.Reasonable progressively responsible experience troubleshooting, repairing and installing industrial electrical equipment including but not limited to switchgear, transfer switches, flow meters, SCADA equipment.Necessary special qualifications include :
Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.Must obtain a valid Florida driver's license prior to hire.Certifications required : Florida or Broward County Journeyman Electrical license or a Master Electrical license or equivalent.Certifications preferred : Bucket Truck Certification; and Forklift Certification.Physical requirements include :
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and / or other City-issued technology devices.Physical capability to effectively use and properly operate City assigned vehicles, manual or power tools, and other standard equipment.Must have sufficient physical strength and agility to perform manual labor.Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and / or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.Ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time.Ability to work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather and / or other adverse conditions.Ability to load, carry, lift, push and / or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.Ability to climb and descend stairways and ship ladders at unusual heights of up to 40 feet.Ability to hear within normal audio range, with or without correction.Ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction.Ability to withstand exposure to the following conditions without stress : excessive noise, unpleasant odors, chemicals / other environmental substances and blood borne pathogens.If applicable : Perform work at locations with exposure over, in and around water, which may not be accessible to the physically handicapped.Knowledge, skills, and abilities include :
Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.Knowledge of the occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions of electrical work.Knowledge of the installation, alteration, repair and maintenance of both high and low voltage electrical and electronic systems and equipment found in the plant of assignment.Knowledge of circuitry and motor control installation and repair.Knowledge of local and national electrical codes.Skill in the care and use of standard and special electrical tools and testing equipment.Skill in using department software.Ability to make estimates of time and materials.Ability to locate and adjust defects in electrical and electronic systems and equipment.Ability to install and test electrical systems and equipment and to locate and repair defects.Ability to work from electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications.Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.Ability to physically perform required duties.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department officials, other employees, and the general public.
