Overview
Senior Engineer, Procurement New Product Development at Smith+Nephew. This role is the primary procurement interface for New Product Developments to grow the company product portfolio. It involves active participation in cross-functional teams across Research & Development, Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, Product Development, Marketing, Regulatory and Supply Chain. The position is the primary point of contact with external suppliers for quotations, negotiations and status reports. Early supplier involvement is expected to drive the initial phase gates and ensure a fully qualified product hand-off to production. The role monitors costs throughout the development cycle and provides reports to the team and management. This position supports Global Procurement objectives including protecting the company's reputation, creating shared value with suppliers, enhancing margin, accelerating revenue growth through rapid NPD execution, and building an agile supplier network with balanced risk management.

- Adhere to the Smith & Nephew Code of Conduct and applicable company policies.
- Steward processes in line with Medical Device industry requirements and regulations for the specific process, product, or purchased commodity.
- Perform procurement activities compliant with regulatory requirements and industry standards (e.g., Modern Slavery Act, Conflict Minerals).
- Protect Intellectual Property and company information from unauthorized disclosure and legal exposure.
- Partner with Supplier Quality to assure supplier performance and enhance supplier relationships.
- Encourage Supplier Diversity.
- Complete required training courses by assigned due dates.
Create shared value with our suppliers.
Collaborate with suppliers to maximize mutual business outcomes.Maintain strong relationships with Direct Procurement Leaders and support commodity strategies implementation.Schedule technical meetings and supplier reviews to understand supplier technology, strengths, weaknesses and future directions.Know the product technology roadmap and establish key supplier relationships to leverage new technologies.Enhance margin and profitability.
Complete Make vs. Buy analyses with team-reviewed forms.Identify suitable supplier candidates aligned with category strategy and supplier readiness.Ensure clear communication of specifications between suppliers and project teams.Present the project-level Sourcing Decision Matrix with a target cycle time of under four weeks; manage documentation per quality standards.Coordinate initial project cost estimates for new and carry-over components and monitor costs throughout development.Develop costs and negotiate pricing with suppliers to meet target costs; identify and mitigate cost risks.Lead Supplier Meetings to drive project deliverables and partner with engineering to improve Total Cost of Ownership.Resolve purchased price variances, AP discrepancies, receiving discrepancies and quality credits timely.Accelerate revenue growth through rapid New Product Development (NPD) execution.
Understand parts, processes and suppliers to support commodity strategies for successful New Product Launches.Act as Procurement point on NPD teams with accountability for on-time and on-budget delivery.Provide procurement input early in the process using knowledge of business, suppliers and category strategy.Offer guidance to Product Development on prototype requirements.Manage Global Procurement-related product launch activities in SAP (e.g., purchase orders at phase gates, quality inspections, etc.).Manage and present the Open Order Report and track prototype and trial material deliveries.Coordinate hand-off to the buyer / planner after final product launch.Design an agile and reliable supplier network, through balanced risk management.
Identify business risks with new or current materials, processes and suppliers using standard risk processes and mitigations.Incorporate risk assessment results into the New Product Plan and coordinate alternate sourcing pipelines as needed.What will you need to be successful?
Education
Bachelors or Masters of Science in Engineering or a medical-related field such as Biomedical Engineering or Biomechanics.Experience
Minimum of 5 years of procurement or engineering related experience within a manufacturing environment.Experience in a medical device or similarly regulated industry is desirable.Experience supporting multiple complex projects via cross-functional teams.Knowledge
Working knowledge of ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Ariba).Competences
Ability to operate in a highly matrixed organization with dotted-line reporting.Sense of urgency and accountability to deliver tasks on time.Self-motivated and resourceful, able to work independently and request resources as needed.Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate with Procurement, NPD teams and suppliers.Strong organizational skills to manage complex work independently within guidelines.Ability to gain internal buy-in across departments.Inclusion and Benefits
