Roadway Sign Maintenance Assistant
This is responsible labor intensive work assisting with the maintenance of all roadway signs for the Maury County Highway Department. Activities associated with the job include assisting with the installation, repair and maintenance of all directional and traffic signs along county owned roadways, assisting with stocking and storing materials and supplies required for departmental operations and assisting other county departments with special needs and concerns. Additional activities include barricading roads for special events and / or road construction or repair activities. Job activities can be physically demanding and require the incumbent to work in a variety of weather conditions. Job responsibilities require considerable knowledge of the regulations regarding the placement and size of traffic and directional signs, sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions, and skill in the use of power tools and equipment utilized on the job. Job performance is evaluated by the Traffic Control Coordinator through review of the maintenance of signs along county owned roadways, knowledge of roadway sign and marking regulations, ability to respond in a timely manner to urgent and / or emergency situations, ability to follow daily instructions and the ability to interact effectively with other county departments and assist them whenever possible.
Illustrative Examples of Work :
- Installs and maintains traffic and directional signs along all county owned streets and roadways.
- Assists with cutting down trees and removing brush that has fallen in the roadway and / or obstructed drivers' views of oncoming traffic.
- Utilizes a cutting torch and / or welding equipment to fix signs in need of repair.
- Assists with ensuring the proper storage of sign materials, poles, paint and other equipment and supplies required for painting and signage operations.
- Responds to emergency requests in the event of traffic and / or directional signs being knocked down, stolen, etc.
- Assists with making customized signs for roadways to indicate the names of streets and ensures they are properly maintained.
- Inspects county owned streets and roads to determine the need for new signs, signs needing repair and the condition of road markings including crosswalks, directional arrows, etc.
- Places barricades around construction sites, road hazards and / or blocks off roads for special events and activities.
- Assists various county departments with signage and / or pavement marking when necessary.
- Removes signs and banners that fail to comply with sign codes and ordinances and / or interfere with the line of sight for drivers.
- Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work :
Graduation from an accredited high school; considerable knowledge of local ordinances, codes and state regulations governing the installation of signs and marking of pavement; experience installing and maintaining directional and traffic signs; considerable knowledge of the paint and reflective materials utilized for signs and pavement marking; good organizational and interpersonal skills; experience maintaining inventories of materials and supplies; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; or any equivalent combination of education and / or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills :Considerable knowledge of local ordinances and state regulations regarding the placement and installation of traffic and directional signs and pavement markings.Considerable knowledge of the paint and reflective materials utilized for roadway signs and markings.Considerable knowledge of the tools and equipment utilized to install and maintain signs and paint pavement including all safety precautions.Knowledge of Maury County government procurement policies and procedures.Knowledge of the signage and pavement marking needs of various county departments including the school system, public works, light and power, sheriff's department, etc.Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.Ability to respond in a prompt and timely manner to urgent and / or emergency situations regarding roadway signs, road repairs, downed trees, etc.Ability to interact effectively with local officials, department heads and the public.Ability to maintain departmental information and documentation in an organized and accessible manner.Ability to maintain materials and equipment in accordance with existing policies and procedures.Ability to respond in an appropriate and timely manner to individuals' concerns and / or questions.Skill in the use of all hand and power tools and equipment utilized by the paint and sign department.Necessary Special Requirements :
Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver's license and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.Physical Requirements :
