Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers, the Director is responsible for planning, directing, controlling, evaluating and implementing academic support programs in the department. Supervises a team of Science specialists. Position functions with a high degree of autonomy and works in close collaboration and communication with the colleges, campus retention programs, and academic departments. The Director is responsible for supporting the University's graduation and retention efforts by providing direction and guidance to staff and students. Responsible for ongoing development and review of existing and new academic initiatives that support the strategic plans and mission of the University. Coordinate the teaching component of the math and science courses offered in the department. Teaches their own sections of science courses (ex. Organic chemistry, General Chemistry, Physics). Assists in formulating and administering assessment efforts for the unit. Acts on behalf of the Executive Director as his / her designee. #CA-AR

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in a physical or biological science or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Supervisory experience; selecting, supervising, and developing staff, developing performance standards, evaluating / correcting performance, and encouraging employee motivation.
  • Experience teaching and / or tutoring high-school or college-level science (chemistry, biology, and / or physics,etc).
  • Skills to clearly explain science (chemistry, biology, and / or physics, etc.) concepts to assist students in acquiring problem solving strategies.
  • Ability to demonstrate consideration of others' priorities, opinions, and concerns, to assure cooperation in working with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Skills to plan and coordinate the scheduling of workshops and courses.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and / or single-subject teaching credential in a physical or biological science.
  • Experience teaching general and organic chemistry or introductory physics to college students.
  • Strong understanding of college-level science (chemistry, biology, and / or physics, etc.)curriculum, including developmental through advanced courses.
  • Knowledge of university policy and procedures in relation to staff recruitment, supervision, and evaluation.
  • Skills to assess budgetary needs to determine funding priorities.

  • Department Overview

    The Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers is a large centralized academic support unit in Student Affairs. We provide an inclusive and interactive learning environment where students participate in reinforcing and retaining knowledge in multi-disciplinary writing, math, and science subjects through co-curricular academic services including classes, workshops, office hours, content reviews, drop-in tutoring, a writing studio, and writing appointments.

    The AATC supports students through pathways for academic success which includes success coaching, learning strategies workshops, and support for students exploring graduate and law school with pre-law and pre-graduate advising.

    The Math Diagnostic Testing Project is a program in AATC that supports math testing in K-12 California schools. AATC'ss administrative support team provides payroll and human resources assistance as well as program information for students and staff.

    AATC consists of 20 professional staff and 400 undergraduate BX tutors and readers and student assistants.
