Medical-surgical nurses care for patients from adolescence throughout the life span. Medical-surgical nurses are skilled in assessing, diagnosing, and treating actual or potential alterations in functional ability and lifestyle. The goal of patient care is to restore or maintain optimal health. In addition to providing safe and high-quality patient care throughout the hospital stay, med / surg nurses often are the last ones discussing discharge instructions with patients and families to ensure every detail is taken care of.
Nurses may take anywhere from 3 to 6 patients. Average patient load is 4 to 5 patients per nurse. Nurse Care hours are equal for day shift and night shift.
