Job description

Summary

The Communications and Policy Director will provide essential services to the County Judge’s Office to assist and support the review and creation of public policy as well as communication efforts that best inform County stakeholders.

This position will manage numerous projects in both an independent and collaborative nature.

The ideal candidate has strong research and analysis skills, the ability to self-start and work independently as well as part of a larger team, strong interpersonal skills, and familiarity with and knowledge of traditional and digital communications etiquette and tools and government functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as initial point of contact and interface for press inquiries, requests for comment, and interview requests for County Judge.
  • Coordinates with press contacts to schedule and facilitate press interviews as needed.
  • Maintains, updates as necessary, and oversees the County Judge’s official website and social media channels.
  • Identifies content and generally prepares County Judge’s official newsletter, working with other staff and departments as needed.
  • Identifies opportunities for County Judge to participate in media proactively.
  • Monitors communications channels (social media channels, email inboxes, etc.) and uses sound judgment to assess need for engagement of other staff and departments as needed.
  • Possesses either a strong understanding of the statutes and case law that inform and shape county governments or the ability to get up to speed quickly.
  • Reviews policy and budget proposals, forming recommendations and briefs as needed for County Judge and staff.
  • Researches potential policy and budget proposals, assessing feasibility and proposes solutions to identified issues as needed.
  • Identifies challenges in county government proactively and devises and presents actionable solutions.
  • Crafts policy language, policy briefs and one-pagers, policy presentations, and other written documents as needed.
  • Conducts regular investigations into best practices, solutions, and models from other counties in Texas and across the country.
  • Performs all other related duties involved in the operation of the County Judge’s Office as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

NOTE: YOU MUST FILL OUT THE WORK HISTORY and EDUCATION SECTIONS OF APPLICATION TO SHOW YOU HAVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION AS REQUIRED BY HIRING DEPARTMENT OR BE DISQUALIFIED.

TO APPLY, must have a Bachelor’s degree or higher education
OR
TO APPLY, must have an Associate’s degree + Two (2) full-time years of related work experience
OR
TO APPLY, must have a High School diploma or GED + Four (4) full-time years of related work experience.

Strong writing and document formatting skills. Superior project management skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects with competing deadlines.

Experience with locating, securing, and synthesizing a diversity of information, sound research skills, and ability to find and extract information from a variety of sources including the internet and telephone conversations.

Attention to detail.

Strong verbal skills on all levels including one-on-one, event networking, and public speaking.

Excellent computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Possess administrative skills and etiquette in operations of an office.

Must have the ability to communicate effectively with County employees and the public.

If hired, must provide proof of educational attainment
