The Role

The Engineering Efficiencies team works hands-on with various high-priority projects within the Infrastructure Engineering organization. The team's core mandate is to :

Provide flexible engineering capacity to the Infrastructure Engineering organization.

Provide a growth path for early-career engineers to develop into expanded roles across GM.

Infrastructure Engineering seeks to provide world-class software infrastructure that empowers teams across GM to build the best vehicle software in the industry. Some of the domains this includes are vehicle services, developer tooling, test automation, and cloud infrastructure platforms.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead key engagements with our partner teams within Infrastructure Engineering to deliver on high-visibility problems end to end. You will write and review production code and raise the bar on architecture, reliability, and software engineering excellence. You will act as a technical leader and mentor, pairing with early-career engineers on design, planning, and delivery, and ensuring consistent high-quality outcomes. You will have a wide view of the systems at GM and find points of cross-functional improvement.

What You'll Do

Lead key engagements end-to-end in collaboration with stakeholders on other teams

Deliver high-quality, well-testedproduction code

Mentor early-career engineers via pairingand actionable feedback to accelerate growth and autonomy.

Uplevel engineering practices across the org : system design, CI / CD optimization, test strategy, build and review pipelines, and release discipline

Improve observability and operational readiness with metrics, logs, traces, runbooks, and post-incident learning

Translate recurring pain points into reusable libraries, templates, and golden paths that compound team efficiency

Partner cross-functionally (platform, TPM, SRE, security, product) to de-risk dependencies and land pragmatic designs

Establish measurable milestones oneach project and reporting progress against them

Build a culture of software engineering excellence in both the Engineering Efficiencies team and in the wider Infrastructure Engineering organization

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or related field (or equivalent rigor demonstrated through experience)

10+ years of experience in software engineering organizations as an individual contributor

A strong track record leading the end-to-end design and development of complex software initiatives

A deep, T-shaped engineering foundation : you're broadly fluent across platforms, paradigms, and tooling, while possessing real depth in at least a couple major areas

A persistent curiosity, both technologically and organizationally

A genuine passion for teaching and mentoring, and a track record ofhelping engineers level up through code reviews, architectural guidance, workshops, and well-crafted docs

The ability to contextswitch gracefully and add value across multiple teams or problem spaces without losing the strategic thread

A demonstrated knack for rapidly evaluating and adopting new technologies

Motivation to influence engineering culture at scale-raising quality bars, shaping technical standards, and amplifying impact beyond your own code

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating solutions on a major cloud platform-particularly Microsoft Azure

Practical infrastructure-as-code expertise

Proven experience implementing secure and reliable CI / CD automation

Full-stack application development experience : Spring Boot (or similar backend web development framework) for backend services and modern SPA frameworks like Angular or React for frontend delivery

Containerization and orchestration proficiency : building images, managing runtime concerns, and operating workloads with Docker / Kubernetes

Strong relational database skills

Compensation : The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

The salary range for this role is $165,000 to$298,800. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

Bonus Potential : An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
