Job Description
A GI Technician , also known as a Gastrointestinal Technician , works in the medical field to assist gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals with procedures related to the digestive system. They are primarily involved in preparing patients for gastrointestinal procedures, assisting during the procedures, and ensuring the equipment used is functioning properly. GI Technicians play a crucial role in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as endoscopies and colonoscopy exams, and support patient care in various gastroenterology settings.
Key Responsibilities :
Assist physicians during diagnostic procedures such as endoscopies , colonoscopy , gastroscopy , and sigmoidoscopy .
Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the process, answering any questions, and ensuring they understand pre-procedure instructions (e.g., fasting or bowel prep).
Operate and troubleshoot various gastrointestinal equipment, including endoscopes , video processors , suction devices , and electrocautery units .
Maintain accurate patient records, including procedure details, equipment used, and any complications encountered.
Work closely with gastroenterologists, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that procedures run smoothly.
Adhere to infection control and safety protocols , ensuring all equipment is sterilized and prepared according to guidelines.
Educate patients on post-procedure care, such as dietary restrictions, follow-up appointments, or medication instructions.
