Job Title : Landfill and Transfer Site Operations

This position participates in Borough landfill and transfer site operations. Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values : Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness, and Teamwork.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.

One (1) year of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Related experience may include : driving semi-trucks and trailers in a professional capacity. Operating skid steers, front-end loaders, excavators, snowplows and sanders. Knowledge of proper cleanup in a landfill and / or disposal area.

Possession of a valid Class A, Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Alaska and possession of a valid Department of Transportation medical card is required.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain the State of Alaska CDL HazMat endorsement within three (3) months of hire.

Current HAZWOPER certification or ability to become HAZWOPER certified within six months of hire date.

Certification in Asbestos identification.

Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and physical.

This position is subject to federal drug and alcohol testing provisions.

Duties / Responsibilities

• Monitors the central landfill; ensures customer compliance with policies and procedures.
• Effectively answers questions from the public to provide information and resolve complaints.
• Closes and opens disposal sites; keeps disposal areas clean and functional.
• Operates semi-tractor and trailer to transport solid waste to the landfill.
• Operates a variety of heavy equipment.
• Develops and plans special projects.
• Builds and constructs retaining walls, signage, retaining nets, and fencing.
• Repairs and remodels transfer site buildings.
• Operates a wide variety of hand and power tools.
• Maintains chainsaws, weed eaters, chop saws, and other hand and power tools.
• Maintains and repairs division equipment.
• Monitors automated scale to ensure accuracy.
• Monitors the disposal of Asbestos and other special waste in accordance with Federal and State regulations.
• Conducts snow removal operations.
• Maintains grounds at all division properties.
• Assists in the scale house as required.
• Performs related duties.

Temporary and Thousand Hour (1000) employees for the Mat-Su Borough do not receive a benefits package. Following is a brief description of the only benefit provided to this class of employee.

Alaska Supplemental Benefits System : The Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) is in lieu of Social Security and is mandatory. An employee contributes at 6.13% of gross wages, matched by the Borough (6.13%), on the present wage base of $176,100.
