Position Summary :

The Department of Large Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, invites applications for a clinical-track faculty position in Farm Practice in the Field Services Section at the rank of clinical assistant / associate professor.

The University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Field Services Section brings together 3 hospital services : General Large Animal Ambulatory Service Theriogenology, General Farm Practice, and Production Medicine Services. The Section currently includes 9 faculty, 4-6 house officers and 3 veterinary assistants. The General Farm Practice Service provides primary and selected specialized veterinary care to a mixed large animal population in the field.

All services in the Field Services Section share a mission to advance animal health and well-being through high quality large animal veterinary practice in the field with the ability to offer selected specialty services, clinical education for veterinary students, interns, and residents, and clinically applicable scientific study. The General Large Animal Ambulatory Service serves a diverse large animal caseload (majority equine) primarily in the greater Athens, GA area meeting the needs of local large animals and their owners while providing high quality clinical education. The General Large Animal Ambulatory Service (Farm Practice) clinical rotation for fourth year students is a cornerstone opportunity for gaining experience and knowledge in large animal primary, first-opinion care in the field. Thanks to the diverse qualifications of the faculty and collaborative efforts of the services within the section, patients, clients, and students benefit from the wide spectrum of veterinary services that can be provided.

As a clinical track position, most of the faculty member’s time will be allocated to clinical teaching and service. The specific faculty assignment will be tailored to the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Farm Practice service and Departmental needs. The ideal candidate would be willing to enthusiastically embrace first opinion large animal cases (equine, small ruminant, bovine, camelid, and pet pig). Expertise and comfort with equine routine / preventative care and emergencies and willingness to provide veterinary care to other large animal species is required. Expertise, interest, and / or advanced training in an area of practice that would complement the current team is considered highly advantageous. The successful candidate should have an interest in promoting the diverse caseload and augmenting the services offered to best serve the teaching and service needs of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Service to clients is an integral part of hospital duties. All faculty are expected to participate in scholarly activity related to clinical service and teaching, but establishing an independent research program is not expected. Collaborative research is encouraged as is development of continuing education programs to veterinarians and the public.

The employment starting date for the successful candidate is negotiable but targeted for Fall 2025.

Additional Requirements :

To be considered for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have 2 years post-DVM experience in large animal practice. To be considered for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine; have a minimum of 7 years post-DVM experience (at the time of appointment); and be board certified in a relevant discipline or have an exception as noted below.

Relevant / Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and / or Certification :

The successful candidate is expected to obtain and maintain a valid Georgia veterinary license as well as eligibility for a State of Georgia driver’s license. Candidates with and without board certification in a relevant discipline are encouraged to apply. Candidates without board certifications should have expertise in primary care large animal practice and / or accomplishments that compensate for, or make irrelevant, the lack of board certification. Additionally, it is advantageous if the applicant has expertise in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Teaching responsibility met through clinical and preclinical teaching of veterinary students as well as supervision of interns and residents. Teaching the Farm Animal Practice Rotation accounts for roughly 35-40% EFT. Preclinical teaching accounts for the remaining teaching EFT.

Research responsibilities met through original research studies focused on areas relevant to equine podiatry, equine lameness and imaging. Consistent involvement with 1-2 studies per year producing abstracts for presentation and scholarly publications.
