Summary

The Lead Associate Traffic Engineer acts as a technical expert and will leverage deep knowledge of their discipline to help create company standards, lead and mentor younger staff, and impact projects across the organization. They will be responsible for the delivery of technically sound products that meet internal and external client expectations and are delivered on time and on / under budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Possesses specialized discipline or functional expertise that is utilized across office and / or business line boundaries to complete work.
  • As an individual contributor, uses professional judgment to direct and independently complete assigned engineering designs.
  • Assist managers by mentoring junior engineers, answering their questions, and monitoring their progress.
  • Checks the accuracy (formal and informal QA / QC) of assigned tasks completed by other engineering and technical staff.
  • Participates in the creation of firm-wide standards related to their area of expertise.
  • Makes design decisions for area of expertise that meet the needs of external customers while coordinating the impact of such decisions on related project efforts.
  • Pro-actively identifies technical, schedule or financial issues and seeks resolution from the Project Manager and / or the client, as appropriate to the situation.
  • Assists the Client in bidding or contractor selection if authorized by the Project Manager.
  • Independently communicates on technical matters with the client.
  • Acts as technical expert on assigned projects when operating as an individual contributor, and acts as Project Manager on smaller scope or specialty projects as assigned.
  • Provides mentoring and / or technical leadership to less experienced staff in order to develop broad technical expertise for the organization within the Consulting Engineer’s specialized discipline or functional area.
  • Participates in technical and professional associations related to their area of expertise and presents technical papers and topics to increase the perceived expertise of the company.
  • May assist in business development efforts when their technical expertise is crucial to positioning the firm to win future work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, and be professionally registered.
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience with a focus on Traffic related projects including studies, analysis, traffic signal design and modeling.
  • Certified as an EIT; PTOE Certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrate specialty or deep functional or discipline knowledge which positions the Lead Engineer as a respected regional / national expert in their focal area.
  • Experience working with HCS, Synchro / SimTraffic, VISSIM, VISTRO, Corsim, Microstation / Geopak, SignCAD, and Rodel is desired.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office and discipline specific software programs.
  • Capable of correctly operating technical analysis equipment and computer equipment.
  • Demonstrates strong technical verbal and technical writing skills and be able to read technical literature and engineering plans.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be able to apply professional knowledge to the solution of both routine and non-routine tasks and engineering activities.
  • Expected to develop financial project management skills through assigned project work and assigned project management assignments.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations such as ITE, ITS America, ASCE, and APWA is desired.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of residence and a reliable means of transportation to travel for company business.
