Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

Facilities Operations has the responsibility of providing a wide range of services to all administrative departments, student programs, and all academic schools and departments. Services include all aspects of corrective and preventive maintenance, operations, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, utility infrastructure maintenance and operations, business operations, safety, regulatory compliance, project management, and renovations. These duties are conducted for a campus consisting of over 100 buildings totaling 6 million gross square feet on over 275 acres.

Position Summary

The Electronic Specialist Advanced position ensures high quality installation, maintenance, and operation / performance of the Universitys telecommunications systems. The Electronic Specialist has responsibility for installing, maintaining, and servicing a variety of telephone equipment, installing voice and data communication circuits, security systems, security cameras, panic systems, door access, fire alarm communication, elevator communications, and associated cabling. The Electronic Specialist is responsible for organizing and completing the technical day-to-day operations assigned through work orders and servicing trouble calls. The Electronic Specialist also performs technical and skilled work in the installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, and communication to BAS of all utility meters. This to include electrical, water, chilled water, and steam to insure accurate readings for energy usage logging and billing. This position also performs hardware and software preventive maintenance, repairs, and improvements. This position will reside in the Life Safety shop and report to the Lead Fire Alarm Tech.

This is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event policy. Mandatory employees are expected to report to or remain at work during adverse weather and emergency events and, if deemed necessary, to work a different schedule or shift than normally assigned. This position may also be required to participate in the On-Call and Emergency Callback program as outlined in the Facilities Operations Standard Operating Procedure.

Minimum Qualifications

ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN ELECTRONICS; OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. ALL DEGREES MUST BE RECEIVED FROM APPROPRIATELY ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five to seven (5-7) years of direct or related experience and a minimum of an Associates degree or two year college equivalent preferred.

    Key Responsibilities

    Key Responsibility : Calibration, Operation and Maintenance of communications related equipment and electronic devices associated with the campus building utilities

    Essential Tasks Communications

  • Installs, moves, repairs, and modifies communications related equipment according to job order specifications, standards, and procedures by repairing data equipment, determining cable, wire and equipment needed to accomplish the service requested, installing circuits, cross-connects, equipment, etc., interconnecting circuits to BAS or at the vendor demarcation location, testing and verifying proper operation of the installed circuits and / or equipment, verifying that the circuits and / or the equipment provides the service requested by the customer, completing the work order showing the work is completed, ensuring the network documentation is updated, and interfacing with off-campus telecommunications vendors.
  • Act as technical liaison for Facilities Operations for these systems during performance of these duties.
  • Essential Tasks Utility Meters

  • Conduct field inspections, maintenance, repairs, and perform review of building utility meters as needed or required to verify proper operation and data collection per design.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement utility strategies to reduce energy consumption. Coordinate with supervision and with other University staff as needed.
  • Essential Tasks Fire Alarm Systems

  • Assist other technicians with maintenance and repair as required to ensure proper operational status is maintained.
  • Perform troubleshooting as needed. Participates in fire alarm on-call rotation.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment, use safe work practices, and participate in all assigned safety-related training to avoid work-related injury.
  • Essential Tasks Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate operation, maintenance and repair records of campus buildings utilities communications systems, fire alarm systems and metering systems including facility plans, associated technical data, and sequences of operation.
  • Provide this and other documentation to support the above-mentioned responsibilities in an accurate and timely manner.
