Department Summary

The Division of Student Life supports the universitys academic mission and strategic plan through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four major portfolios the Office of the Dean of Students Experiential Learning & Engagement Health & Wellbeing and Division Administration. Key programs and departments within the division include but are not limited to University Health Services Erb Memorial Union Physical Education & Recreation Parent and Family Programs Major Student Events (Commencement Homecoming University Day) Fraternity and Sorority Life Counseling Health Promotion Multicultural and Identity Based Support Services Student Government Engagement & Success Student Conduct and Community Standards and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.

University Health Services (UHS) is a nationally accredited (AAAHC) outpatient clinic providing primary care to students at the University of Oregon. All staff are required to uphold the values of the UHS and work in support of the University Health Services mission and vision consistent with UO policy. Some aspects of this position may be completed in collaboration with other University departments.

Position Summary

The Mental Health Intake / Crisis Specialist works collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team of professionals to meet the diverse mental health needs of a global student community. This position provides culturally responsive mental health services to UO students including initial consultation / triage emergency / crisis services and case management as needed. They must work exceptionally well with students of color LGBTQ students international students and other underrepresented students and communities on campus.

This position will be part of the Mental Health Access Team (MHAT) at UHS. This team will be responsible for greeting all students who call or walk in seeking mental health care becoming an integral part of helping the student quickly access professional help. The team will speak with the student to determine their need and then help the student find an appointment with the UHS provider who can best meet their mental health condition. Knowing students may arrive in many states of mental health our access team will be prepared to be the first point of contact for all students from those with minimal mental health support needs through those having an acute mental health crisis.

Typical duties include :

Responding to student inquiries for mental health care

Providing clinical screening and crisis intervention services

Establishing appropriate stabilization and care plan for each person seeking services

Providing single session follow-up support and brief interventions

Finding internal and external resources

Ensuring appropriate information and referral for follow-up care

This position covers September 1 through June 30 a period of 10 months per academic year and reports to the Assistant Director Mental Health Access.

This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check and routine screening of Medicaid and Medicare Exclusion Lists. Employee loses eligibility for employment if on the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) and / or System of Award Management (SAM). In addition employee must follow Compliance with UHS policies regarding tuberculosis screening measles and mumps (MMR) seasonal flu hepatitis B and other immunization requirements.

Minimum Requirements

Masters degree in counseling couples and family therapy social work or a related field.

Licensure status :

  • Masters-level applicants must be currently licensed or be able to obtain licensure in Oregon prior to the start date.
  • Doctoral-level applicants must be licensable in Oregon. If currently licensed in another state must be licensed in Oregon within four months of hire. Unlicensed doctoral applicants must have an approved residency contract with the Oregon Board of Psychologists within one month of the start date and must be licensed within two years of the start date.

One year of experience with mental health issues relevant to college populations.

One year of crisis intervention experience.

Professional Competencies

Experience with and / or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Skills knowledge and commitment to meet the needs of students of color students from indigenous communities LGBTQ students international students veterans students from diverse religious affiliations undocumented students and first-generation students.

Ability to provide culturally- and trauma-informed clinical assessment crisis intervention case management and mental health triage.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with colleagues and clients.

Excellent clinical documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing crisis assessment and support services for high-risk clients.

Experience providing case management / referral services.

Bilingual or multilingual counseling skills.

Experience working in a multidisciplinary team of health and mental health professionals.

Experience working with insurance plans.

Current Oregon license (LCSW LPC LMFT PhD PsyD).
