Job Title : Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Exempt Status : exempt Reports to : Principal and District Lead Nurse Dept. / School : Campus as assigned Primary Purpose : Implement comprehensive program of health service for assigned campus that aligns with District program. Provide health services to students and staff. Promote health education and preventative health practices for students and staff. Oversee the day to day needs of students; as related to health care. Qualifications : Education / Certification : Valid Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse License in the state of Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners Experienced school nurse preferred Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct and record student vision, hearing and spinal screenings Certification by the Texas Department of State Health services to vision screen with a Spot Vision Camera BLS / CPR Certification Special Knowledge / Skills : Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills Ability to implement policies and procedures Able to execute student plans of care Bloodborne Pathogen Trainer Epi Pen Trainer Experience : Two years of nursing experience, preferably in school nursing Major Responsibilities and Duties : Nursing Services 1. Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols. 2. Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students. 3. Serve as health advocate for students. 4. Notify parent(s) / guardian(s) of accidents or illnesses and secure medical care for students until parent / guardian arrival. 5. Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy, procedures and physician orders. 6. Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening program, conduct professional referrals when necessary. 7. Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings while maintaining communication with the District lead nurse. 8. Evaluate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics. Instruction 8. Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups. 9. Educate faculty or staff as needed on health related topics 12. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students. Consultation 13. Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community. 14. Assess student health concerns and make appropriate referrals in conjunction with lead nurse with student, teacher(s), parent(s) / guardian(s), and medical and health care professionals as needed. 15. Participate as requested in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team and school committees and implement Individual Education Plans (IEP's) and individual Health Plans (IHP's) 16. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission and accompanied by the Lead Nurse and / or Campus Principal. 17. Communicate regularly with principal, Lead Nurse, school counselor, teachers, parents, food service and other staff regarding student health issues. Clerical 16. Obtain, review and evaluate student immunizations and notify appropriate individuals to maintain compliance. 17. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required according to district policy. 18. Request and properly maintain supplies and equipment needed for effective clinical operations. Compliance 19. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area. 20. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. 21. Maintain confidentiality. 22. Report potential health and safety hazards to Lead Nurse and / or principal. Safety 23. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care. 24. Keep health clinic clean and sanitary. Professional Development 25. Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener. 26. Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. Equipment Used : Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.
