About the Role

The City of Kirkwood is seeking a calm, quick-thinking, and highly reliable Dispatcher to join our Communications team. This vital position serves as the first point of contact in emergencies - connecting residents, police, fire, EMS, and other departments when every second counts.

What You'll Do

  • Receive and process 911 emergency and non-emergency calls , determining the nature and location of incidents.
  • Dispatch police, fire, EMS, and public works personnel according to established procedures and priorities.
  • Provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) pre-arrival instructions using ProQA protocols.
  • Monitor multiple radio frequencies, maintaining constant awareness of unit locations and statuses.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information through Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) , MULES , REJIS , and NCIC systems.
  • Monitor City Hall and Police Department video and security systems , including prisoner holding areas.
  • Respond courteously and professionally to public inquiries regarding general assistance, power outages, and other service-related issues.
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and electronic files for calls, incidents, and unit activity.
  • Participate in required training and certification programs , including APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator and Emergency Medical Dispatch certification.

Schedule : As part of a 24 / 7 public safety team, dispatchers rotate shifts that include days, nights, weekends, and holidays-ensuring Kirkwood's residents always have help when they need it most. Shifts are typically eight or twelve hours, with occasional extensions during major incidents or emergencies. Flexibility, teamwork, and reliability are key to success in this vital role.

What You Bring

✅ Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous dispatch or emergency communications experience preferred, but not required .
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and able to obtain CJIS clearance and required certifications after hire.
  • ✅ Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize under pressure.
  • Proficiency in modern computer systems and data entry.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills in emergency situations.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and courteous - even in high-stress or emotional circumstances.
