GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES : Provide the full scope of primary optometry services which fall under his / her field of training, including but not limited to diagnosis, treatment, coordination of care, preventive care and health maintenance to patients of all ages. In addition, an Optometrist is a principal member of the Optometry care team. In that capacity they are expected to be familiar with philosophy, goals and objectives and work collaboratively to achieve them. They must be cognizant of, and comply with, all PanCare policies and procedures, as well as pertinent state and federal regulations.

Specific responsibilities include :

• Provide outpatient care for patients with eye-related disorders and conditions
• Conduct routine eye examinations, including visual field tests
• Determine each patient’s visual acuity, field of vision and hand-eye coordination
• Take detailed medical histories for all patients, including current and past prescription medications
• Evaluate eye-related symptoms, such as discharge, redness and inflammation
• Prescribe corrective lenses when required
• Refer patients to ophthalmologists when required for further eye care
• Educate patients on proper eye care
• Identify eye health safety factors that could impact vision, such as working around chemicals or in front of a computer
• Advise patients about proper eye hygiene and care
• Supervise students in training as assigned
• Comply with the Health Center Infection Control Plan which includes personally utilizing universal precautions. Ensure compliance by support staff
• Participate in peer review, quality assurance, provider meetings and other clinical meetings
• Assist in updating protocols and principles of practice as needed
• Assist in outside optometry community public relations functions
• Adhere to UDS productivity standards and meet at least the minimum requirement
• Participate in all safety programs, which may include assignment to an emergency response team
• Other responsibilities as assigned to create a smoothly run efficient clinic

All providers are responsible for participation in any ongoing quality improvement activities in the optometry clinical area.

Working Conditions :

Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquires.

Physical Demands : Light physical effort (lift / carry up to 10 lbs.); Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; Occasional prolonged standing / walking; Occasionally lifts supplies / equipment; Manual dexterity and mobility. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.
