Early Modern Literature and its Global Legacy Tenure Track Position - Fall 2026
Rank : Faculty
Tenure Information : Tenure Track
Job Description
The Literature Department at Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the area of Early Modern Literature and its Global Legacy, beginning in the fall of 2026. We invite candidates to apply who possess a broad interest in early modern English literature, including Shakespeare, as well as early modern writing from continental Europe. We also seek a colleague whose interests extend forward in time and outwards geographically, to account for the period’s ongoing impact across media and hemispheres. Successful candidates will be capable of designing original courses—both seminars and lectures—that introduce students to a diverse range of authors from 1500 to 1700, as well as to their later interpreters and adapters from around the globe. We welcome areas of teaching specialization such as race, nation and empire; gender and LGBTQ+ studies; disability studies; the history of the book and media studies; performance studies; and ecocriticism. Sarah Lawrence is a small liberal arts college with a dynamic and holistic curriculum, designed to foster students’ capacity to develop a program of study unique to them. We therefore welcome candidates who are intellectually versatile and well rounded, interested in designing and teaching a wide range of courses, including those outside of their area of expertise, and willing to advise students of diverse interests, backgrounds, and trajectories. The position is teaching-intensive, involving two courses per semester. Beyond class instruction, each of these courses includes a significant component of individualized or small-group work with students. We encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with the basics of this distinctive pedagogical model ( https : / / www.sarahlawrence.edu / undergraduate / ) before applying, and to indicate in their letters how they envision working in this format. Applications should include a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; two sample syllabi; course descriptions for two courses that the candidate might offer at Sarah Lawrence; a brief sample of academic writing; and the names of three references who will be contacted for letters of recommendation upon the submission of the candidate’s application.
Consideration of applications will begin on January 7th, 2026. The search will remain open until the position is filled. Compensation listed for this position is for a full-time tenure-track faculty position and will be contingent on teaching experience.
