UNIV - Engineer / Associate Engineer II - Psychiatry : Brain Stimulation Lab

Overview

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is seeking an Engineer / Associate Engineer II. This position is assigned to the Brain Stimulation Laboratory to perform the independent analysis, development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of complex non-invasive brain stimulation, imaging, and recording technologies, which may include : Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS), and others. This individual will assist with studies of non-invasive brain stimulation for improving regulation of cognition and emotion among healthy participants and patients with neuropsychiatric (depression, PTSD, addiction) and neurodegenerative disorders (stroke, dementia), among others. They will research, design, develop, write, and test moderately complex computer programs in Matlab, Python, BASH, Eprime, and other software languages. They will develop system designs, technical specifications, and test plans in conjunction with program managers, research assistants, and other engineers. They will set up and modify existing hardware to meet project specifications, and research new products and technologies and recommend purchases. This job will also include career development mentoring and opportunities for those interested in pursuing graduate work in medicine, neuroscience, psychology or related fields.

Responsibilities

• 35% - Plans and directs appropriate test procedure for QA / QC of the various brain stimulation laboratories. This includes, but is not limited to, generating QA / QC protocols, developing processes for efficient testing, recording results, training graduate students and other personnel in appropriate procedures to use the interface equipment.
• 30% - Helps plan, design, order or build, and then test custom brain stimulation devices such as sham systems. Oversee the technical aspects of the laboratories, maintaining all equipment, performing quality control studies across the different labs, developing new analysis routines and participating in data collection. Performs duties in support of conducting research for complex laboratory research experiments on human subjects to advance the understanding of the control of human locomotion and to develop novel rehabilitation models and techniques that involve brain stimulation methods, including using software programs to investigate the neurophysiological properties of systems and perform mathematical simulations of neurophysiological systems using computational software.
• 15% - Reviews data analysis, poster presentations and literature searches. Supervises personnel in the preparation of materials for presentation.
• 15% - Trains new study personnel and students in the use of BSTIM equipment. Evaluates new technology and advises core directors on equipment for purchases, or its applications.
• 5% - Performs other duties as assigned.
