Examples of duties include scheduling, planning, laying out, assigning, supervising, and inspecting work of crews engaged in the construction, maintenance, and painting of city streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, hardscapes, storm water systems, parking lots, and related structures; supervising and inspecting the work of crews engaged in the installation and repair of traffic signs, graffiti abatement, and allied city construction work; inspecting work performed by contract crews, including asphalt planning, grading, paving, and resurfacing operations; investigating and remedying complaints received from the public and other entities; enforcing city and other governmental, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and safety regulations; maintaining records, preparing reports, and disciplinary memoranda using a personal computer; establishing and controlling operating procedures and work standards; developing and maintaining safe working practices and working areas; estimating material and labor needs; ensuring that crews are properly supplied with materials, tools, and equipment; selecting, training, and evaluating subordinates; assisting in the preparation and monitoring of the division budget; performing other duties as required.
Requirements to file include three years of (full-time equivalent) paid professional experience in the reconstruction, repair, installation, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs, hardscapes, storm water systems, and / or traffic control devices including traffic paint and signage. At least one year of the required three years of experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity. Proof of required documents must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicants name or other identifying characteristics on the form. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate a field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.
Knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the reconstruction, repair, installation, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, curbs, hardscapes, storm water systems, and / or traffic control devices including traffic paint and signage is required. Knowledge of storm water systems inspections is required. Knowledge of pertinent city ordinances and Federal / MUTCD rules, regulations, and codes is required. Willingness to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, overtime, holidays, and respond to emergency callbacks is required. A valid drivers license is required and must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection.
The selection procedure includes an examination with weights for the application and supplemental application and an interview. A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified. In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score.
