Small Commercial Underwriting team is currently seeking an Executive Field Underwriter to join our new business team in Texas.
This is a full time, exempt role. This role is eligible for a fully remote arrangement.
POSITION OVERVIEW / SUMMARY
Executive Field Underwriters are responsible for successfully accomplishing all the Responsibilities and Essential Functions of the Small Commercial Senior Field Underwriter role. Also responsible for demonstrating leadership and applying and utilizing their knowledge in ways that improve the performance of the underwriting team overall, e.g., through mentoring, training, sharing expertise, and participating in broader work or projects above underwriting responsibilities.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL
- Provide mentoring and training to less experienced team members on a variety of topics to increase their skill level / knowledge
- Take the lead on sales strategies with designated agents (in partnership with the Field) to drive new business results
- Serve as “Peer Ambassador” to newly hired team members
- Lead discussions at staff meetings; topics may include coverage handling processes / workflows trend review and associated underwriting actions etc.
- Partner with Underwriting Management and Leadership to identify areas for improvement training topics and approaches for delivering training to underwriting team
- May conduct aggregated backend underwriting review process in collaboration and coordination with Regional Underwriting Manager
- May participate in special projects and initiatives as assigned by management
- Think broadly and creatively to solve a problem for an agent incorporating knowledge of all lines of business and available pricing options that results in a win‑win situation for the Agent and for Hanover Small CL Senior Field Underwriter
RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Lead the daily triage of new business with UT including POS business.Provide direction and guidance to UT to properly prepare a new business accountDetermine the pricing coverages including coverage advantages to highlight in the quoting process account rounding opportunity and identify cross‑sell opportunity for Specialty businesses on accounts being quotedOwn all aspects of the New Business underwriting process including acceptability and documentation at inception as well as subsequent validation through other sources including Loss Control responsible for reviewing and responding to back end underwriting reviews and new business audits.Spearhead the development of effective relationships with Agents and SCSMS that result in writing profitable new businessPartner with internal colleagues mainly SCSMs, UTs and Renewal UW colleagues to most effectively communicate difficult messages with Agent partners and on overall agency managementCommunicate proactively with Agents to convey a sense of ownership and service during all interactions; instill confidence with agents in their decision to place new business with The HanoverAgency travel as needed to build and maintain strong relationshipsKEY MEASURES OF SUCCESS
New Business production (approx. $2 Million annually) quality of audits / file reviews and achievement of mix goals aligned with workflows backend underwriting reviews trend analysis and identificationREQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Maintains highest level of Small Commercial underwriting authority (below manager level); ability to make underwriting decisions on POS and CPP accounts up to $50 000 premium size in both one-on-one and group situationsDemonstrated leadership ability through team and peer interactions; thought of as role model among the team while following workflow standards including agency personnel agency business plan and results with The Hanover across the Franchise Hanover’s position with the agency etcAdvanced sales skills; able to strategically manage Agency relationships that results in profitable new business in addition to sales skills on individual accountsDemonstrated commitment to service and partners; high level of responsiveness UTs SCSMs and renewal UWs demonstrating strong relationship buildingAble to understand and execute to strategic priorities (Ex. mix targets CAT strategy pricing strategy agent strategy etc.)Knowledge of competition and current marketplace; apply to all aspects of performing the role responsiveness and willingness to bring appropriate level of underwriting to each opportunity ranging from exception only underwriting on the small BOP to more thorough review on the larger or more complex accountsAbility to travel up to 20% of timeAbility to use a personal computer and other standard office equipmentAbility to work in a fast-paced or stressful environmentCAREER DEVELOPMENT

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience.
