Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School, one of the country's premier independent schools, is located in central New Jersey, five miles south of Princeton, 55 miles south of New York City, and 40 miles north of Philadelphia. Lawrenceville attracts outstanding students in grades 9-12, plus postgraduate students. The School's 844 students hail from 39 states and 32 countries, with 70 percent boarding and 30 percent day students. Thirty-two percent of students receive $16.9 million in need-based financial aid grants, and 62 percent are students of color. Lawrenceville has approximately 350 full-time employees, including 110 full-time teaching faculty.

Summary :

Reporting to the Head of School and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the Dean of Faculty recruits, develops, supports, evaluates, and ensures the overall outstanding quality of the Lawrenceville faculty. Responsible for maintaining the morale and enthusiasm of our teachers as well as a high bar of accountability and performance, the Dean of Faculty leads and earns the trust and goodwill of the faculty by setting an excellent example of professional conduct, integrity and positive attitude, and expects the same in return. The Dean of Faculty is a full-time, 12-month position.

In close partnership with the Dean of Academics, the Dean of Faculty convenes the department chairs and supervises their management of academic life at the department level, especially their focus on the quality of the pedagogy practiced within each discipline and the resulting classroom experience of our students. With careful attention to workload equity and in consultation with the Deans of Academics, Students, and Athletics and Co-Curricular Activities, the Dean of Faculty determines both the teaching responsibilities of the faculty and all residential and co-curricular assignments.

Positions reporting to the Dean of Faculty include the Assistant Dean of Faculty, Dean of Academics, the academic department chairs, and the assistant to the Dean of Faculty.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities :

Faculty Recruitment, Orientation, and Assignment of Duties

  • In partnership with other deans, chairs and the Human Resources department, oversee the process to recruit, hire, and onboard new faculty, ensuring high-quality staffing of key areas of school life, including academic, residential, athletic, co-curricular, and multicultural. Oversee the Assistant Dean of Faculty in efforts to recruit and onboard University of Pennsylvania teaching fellows.
  • In partnership with deans, assistant deans, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Human Resources department, lead a dynamic, comprehensive process for integrating new faculty into the School including initial orientation and careful mentorship throughout the first year of employment and then offer ongoing support over time.
  • In close consultation with the Chief Financial Officer, manage the faculty salary budget and recommend annual faculty compensation to the Head of School. Partner with the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Human Resources on ensuring benefits programs and policies meet the needs of the school and faculty. Collaborate with the Human Resources office and with the office of the Head of School to produce faculty contracts.
  • With the Dean of Academics and department chairs, ensure that all teaching assignments are filled and courses fully covered.
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students, assign faculty advising and residential responsibilities, including Head of House and Assistant Head of House positions, as equitably and fairly as possible. Also, in partnership with the Dean of Students, ensure a high level of performance of all residential duties, especially as they pertain to the wellbeing of students.
  • Work with the Dean of Athletics and Co-Curricular Education and other co-curricular directors to ensure that all faculty are fully and equitably deployed across co-curricular programs and that their level of skill and preparation will ensure a high-quality experience for students in those programs.
  • In partnership with Human Resources, continually develop and implement comprehensive interview training for all faculty involved in any interview or recruitment capacity.
  • With the Head of School, annually assign faculty housing and oversee summer moves (working in partnership with facilities). Coordinate with the Dean of Students to strategize on Head of House and Assistant Head of House changes.
  • In the case of all work-related assignments, partner with the Human Resources when job modifications and accommodations are needed.

Faculty Professional Development and Support of the Curriculum

  • Provide professional development, mentorship, and coaching to all faculty in order to ensure continuous improvement in key areas, such as classroom pedagogy, residential life, advising, coaching, and oversight of other co-curriculars. In addition, provide professional development and guidance for those seeking promotion, advancement, and leadership opportunities in order to develop leadership capacity within the ranks of the faculty. When applicable, partner with Human Resources to create professional development plans for faculty.
  • In support of the work of the Dean of Academics, the Director of Teaching and Learning, and Department Chairs, help maintain a highly engaging learning environment for students based on the Harkness teaching philosophy. Ensure the
  • overall quality, dynamism, and effectiveness of teaching at Lawrenceville, including providing for ongoing professional development for the faculty.
  • With the Dean of Academics and the department chairs, support curricular initiatives, and develop and implement academic policies.
  • Coordinate annual faculty check-in meetings with the deans and Head of School and use the data for planning professional development activities.
  • Work with the Dean of Academics, the Assistant Dean of Faculty, the Director of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Partnerships and the mentor teachers, to create / modify an evaluation system, as well as oversee the formative and cumulative academic evaluation of faculty, which includes data from classroom visits.
  • Coordinate faculty classroom experience survey, in consultation with the Dean of Academics and department chairs. Analyze survey results and develop action plans in response to the results on an as needed basis.
  • In conjunction with the Head of School, the senior staff, the Assistant Dean of Faculty, and the Director of Teaching and Learning, develop the agenda for and lead faculty meetings / in-service days, and other professional development seminars for faculty. Partner with the Dean of Community and Belonging as well as Human Resources to bring in thought leaders focused on School initiatives such as creating a professional community that promotes the professional wellbeing of all faculty members and creates a sense of belonging.
  • Support the Assistant Dean of Faculty in organization and coordination of external faculty professional development opportunities.
  • Faculty Advocacy & School Culture

  • Foster a sense of community across campus, particularly among faculty and staff. In partnership with the Director of Human Resources, encourage positive working relationships and a quality of work life through the fair treatment and resolution of faculty interests and concerns.
  • Work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals with diverse backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations; appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals and develop the faculty's cross-cultural competencies.
  • In conjunction with the Head of School, the deans, and the department chairs, oversee the awarding of faculty chairs, sabbaticals, and advanced study opportunities. With the Director of Advancement, ensure proper stewardship of faculty chairs and other faculty-related donations, and assist with fundraising as needed.
  • Other Partnerships and Responsibilities

  • Serve as senior staff co-liaison to the Board of Trustees' Academic and Faculty Affairs Committee.
  • With the Dean of Academics, co-chair the Department Chairs group in order to develop and support curricular initiatives, conduct periodic reviews, and refine and reinforce academic policies and practices.
  • Participate in senior staff meetings, Trustee meetings, faculty meetings, department chair meetings, and ad-hoc committees as appropriate.
  • Teach one class in the fall and spring terms.
  • Serve as an academic advisor and participate on a duty team.
  • Contribute to the co-curricular program two-to-three terms / year.
  • Serve as administrator-on-duty once / term and help provide senior staff coverage for international student trips during parts of the spring and summer breaks.
  • With the Dean of Academics and other senior staff, continue to foster closer academic ties between Lawrenceville and the Eight Schools Association. Work with the Director of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Partnerships to sustain other academic partnerships.
  • Working with other academic leaders, play a leadership role in the seven year re-accreditation process with the Middle States Association and ensure subsequent implementation of the plan.

    Requirements

  • Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher)
  • Demonstrated experience supervising adults in an academic environment, an affinity for working with adolescents, preferably in a boarding school environment, especially involving strong teaching experience; coaching and residential life experience are a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in academic leadership and professional development
  • Strong intellect, level of expertise in a specific discipline, and the ability to understand, celebrate, and be conversant across a broad range of disciplines
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, crisis management, and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong cultural competency and experience supporting and encouraging a culture of diversity and inclusion
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication, presentation, problem-solving, resolution, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of this position
  • Ability to provide complex technical information in simplified form to members of the community in written as well as spoken form
  • Comfort with data analysis and data-driven decision making balanced with ability and willingness to make seasoned, experienced judgement calls when information is incomplete

  • Demonstrated success in cultivating collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, parents, family, and community members

  • Willingness to work long hours, especially evening and weekends, dictated by students needs in a residential, 24 / 7 environment
