Job Summary

Support faculty research and student projects in a power and energy laboratory environment by operating, maintaining, and overseeing the use of high-voltage electrical equipment, ensuring safe usage. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist students with electrical design projects at various levels of complexity by : Assisting with the design and fabrication of mechanical assemblies using manual and CNC machine tools.Assisting with electrical circuit design.Assisting with circuit board population and fabrication.Wiring small and medium power systems.
  • Support faculty research by maintaining and operating high voltage electrical equipment including but not limited to diesel generators, electric motor-generator sets, high voltage power supplies, high voltage capacitor banks, AC / DC power supplies, and DC / DC power electronic converters.
  • Maintain laboratory space, ensuring cleanliness, tidiness and safe egress.
  • Assist sophomore, junior, and senior design students with electrical projects and fabrications.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to students.
  • Understand and instruct students on high voltage electrical safety practices.
  • Ensure safety standards are upheld.
  • Assist students in the execution and data collection of sponsored research projects.
  • Assist with procurement of equipment, parts and supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering, technology or related field or a high school education with at least five (5) years experience working in a laboratory or fabrication facility.
  • As a journeyman machinist, electronics technician, or instrument maker.
  • Experience in programming and operating CNC mills, experience maintaining all machines and equipment in the shop, experience supervising lab and shop operations and personnel.
  • Requires familiarity with solid works.
  • MS office tools, and other simple computing skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert laboratory technician and / or machinist with ten (10) years of experience operating manual machine tools and / or CNC machine tools.
  • Capable of maintaining mills and lathes.Capable of operating and maintaining various saws, grinder, sanders, sand blaster, shear and other related equipment.
  • Capable of welding (TIG, MIG, and gas) is preferred but not required.At least five (5) years working with simple electronics in an electronics lab environment.
  • Experience with 3D printers, diagnosing simple electric circuits, wiring electrical systems, and populating printed circuit boards.
  • At least five (5) years of laboratory supervisory experience.
  • Fluent with all measurement tools.
  • Experience in providing advice to students from sophomore, junior, and senior design classes working with small electronic type projects.
  • Experience working with students or similar skill level employees to enhance designs to make manufacturing easier.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Hands-on experience with high-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of people including staff, faculty, and students.
  • Ability to work with simple electrical circuits, populate printed circuit boards, operate manual and CNC machine tools while holding very tight tolerances on machined parts.
  • Capability to organize and manage projects from start to finish.
  • Ability to order raw materials and tools for various jobs in electronics, metal, plastics, and wood.
  • Competency in quoting jobs.
  • Ability to conduct tours and teach students safety, fabrication, and machine operation.
  • Ability to instruct students from organized classes the elements of proper design for machine operations.
  • Ability to function with continuous interruptions.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
  • Other Requirements Working Conditions

  • Working in a laboratory environment.
  • May be exposed to various hazards including chemicals, chemical fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards and biohazards.
  • May work around standard office conditions.
  • Must be able to be on your feet many hours a day.
