Job Title : Library Assistant I

Department : Lake County Public Library

Reports To : Deputy Director of Access Services

Classification : Part- Time, Non-Exempt

Compensation Range : $ 16 - $18 hourly

Position Summary

The Library Assistant works in the circulation department and provides customer service support to library visitors and community members, also known as patrons. This position helps individuals locate materials, answer general inquiries, and use public computers and equipment. The Library Assistant also processes new materials, shelves books using the Dewey Decimal System, and supports library programs and outreach activities as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Perform daily circulation tasks, including checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, and collecting fines or fees.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and helpful customer service to all library visitors.
  • Promote the Library’s mission, values, and community engagement efforts.
  • Process, label, and prepare new library materials for circulation.
  • Assist library users with computers, printers, and software applications.
  • Maintain orderly and accurate library stacks by shelving and shelf-reading.
  • Support programming and outreach activities when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Bilingual Staff (if applicable) :

In coordination with the Spanish Services Coordinator, bilingual staff assist with translation, interpretation, and outreach to Spanish-speaking community members.

    Compensation will be determined by the applicant’s full skillset with consideration of the following :

  • Education : High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience : Less than one year of library, customer service, or administrative experience preferred.
  • Skills : Strong communication, attention to detail, and basic computer proficiency.
  • Service : Typically requires 0–1 year of service with Lake County. Employees in this position may be eligible for consideration for promotion to Library Assistant II after completing at least one year of service, demonstrating consistent job performance, and meeting competency expectations in circulation procedures, customer service, and library operations. Advancement is contingent upon supervisor recommendation and the availability of an open position.
  • Incumbents learn and perform, under supervision, a variety of basic circulation tasks and public service duties.
  • Hazard Notice

    Work is typically performed in a public library setting with minimal exposure to hazards. Employees may occasionally interact with members of the public who are upset, frustrated, or experiencing distress; come into contact with dust, cleaning supplies, or other materials used in maintaining library facilities; perform repetitive motions while typing, shelving, or processing materials; and experience minor physical risks associated with lifting boxes of books or using a step stool.

    Physical Activity & Work Environment

  • Frequently standing, walking, and moving throughout the library.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting library materials.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular use of hands for repetitive motions such as typing, shelving, or operating office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read call numbers, labels, and computer screens.
  • Hearing ability sufficient to respond to spoken communication and assist library visitors.
  • Standard library and office environment with controlled temperature and lighting.
  • May occasionally work in a noisy or distracting environment due to public activity or events.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

    All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.
