TITLE : Long-term Substitute High School Guidance Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Type 73 Student Services certification per state certification authorities.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO : Principal and other district administrators

SUPERVISES : Clerical aide(s) and volunteers as assigned

JOB GOAL(S) : To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life decisions that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Develops programs, interventions, and strategies that promote achievement, optimum personal, social and career development of all students.
  • Designs developmental counseling curriculum based upon knowledge of the student, the community and the overall educational program.
  • Implements appropriate responses to crises and utilizes a variety of intervention strategies for students, families, and communities facing emergency situations.
  • Utilizes a variety of individual counseling strategies and provides appropriate referral services.
  • Maintains collaborative relationships within and outside the school community.
  • Acts as a facilitator of change, and engages in planning and management tasks needed to support the comprehensive developmental school counseling program.
  • Implements prevention education programs.
  • Displays understanding of basic concepts of, technology for, and implications of various assessment and evaluative instruments.
  • Engages in research and program evaluation by analyzing data and using formal and informal methods of needs assessment to design and modify developmental counseling programs.
  • Actively participates in continuing professional development activities.
  • Uses community resources to enhance academic and social / emotional growth, plans appropriate interventions within the context of the community, and advocates for programmatic efforts to eliminate barriers to students' success.
  • Supports students' post secondary planning and transition including financial planning, scholarship applications, and entrance applications.
  • Addresses current trends and issues daily in the school, working collaboratively with other school and student service providers.
  • Analyzes individual and group performance in order to design interventions that meet learners' current needs in the cognitive, social, emotional, ethical, and physical domains at the appropriate grade level.
  • Manages time to include individual student planning, responsive services, system support, and developmental counseling curriculum activities.
  • Demonstrates skills in developing therapeutic relationships, goal setting, intervention strategies, and evaluation of counseling outcomes.
  • Possesses the knowledge and skills to appropriately address issues of diversity, cultural difference, and change.
  • Acts in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines of the profession.
  • Plans purposeful tasks and assignments for clerical aide and student aides and (as appropriate) evaluates job performance in cooperation with the building principal.
  • Respects confidentiality and maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Performs all assigned duties, serves on building or district committees, and attends staff meetings as may be requested or as established by school policy.
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students; seeks appropriate information and assistance (e.g. translation, collegial consultation, administrative guidance, etc.) as needed to support students' continuous growth and development.
  • Adheres to the published policies and procedures of the district.
  • Performs such other, and not specifically enumerated, duties as may be requested by district administrators, or as established by the School Code.

    • COMPENSATION : Based on Plano CUSD 88's Collective Bargaining Agreement.
