Position Summary
The UMass Memorial Health Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Critical Care is a 12-month program focused on preparing Physician Assistants (PAs) and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (ACNPs) for a successful career in critical care medicine. The fellowship includes clinical and didactic curricula designed to provide a solid foundation in the management of critically ill patients. Our rotations provide APP fellows with exposure to a wide variety of complex disease processes with rotations in the medical, surgical, trauma, and neurological critical care units. The curriculum includes protected academic time for didactics, simulation-based learning experiences, procedural training, and journal club.
The PA or NP fellow practices under the general supervision of a physician. Their scope of practice includes : obtaining a complete medical history; performing a physical examination; ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan; prescribing and / or dispensing medication; assisting in surgery or other invasive procedures; and counseling patients and families under supervision of a physician. In addition, the PA or NP fellow is required to participate in a program of instruction provided by the Fellowship Program and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of this Program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
