Community Engagement and Opinion Editor - Nashville

The Tennessean is seeking an experienced Community Engagement and Opinion Editor to join our leadership team at our 118-year-old Nashville institution.

We are looking for a writer passionate about opinions and their role in today's journalism landscape. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping and amplifying our opinion content, ensuring it resonates with our growing audience across Middle Tennessee.

This individual will collaborate closely with Gannett’s opinion team — a talented group of writers and contributors producing high-quality, engaging opinion pieces.

The role also involves extensive community outreach. We seek a dynamic journalist who can foster dialogue through writing, panel appearances, and public forums.

Responsibilities :

• Content Strategy : Collaborate with The Tennessean’s executive editor and top opinion leaders throughout Gannett to develop and execute a comprehensive content strategy aligned with the company's mission and audience engagement goals.
• Write columns and work with contributing writers and columnists at The Tennessean.
• Manage a rotation of opinion interns either semester or annually.
• Content Curation : Curate, edit, and oversee the publication of opinion pieces that are thought-provoking, well-researched, and aligned with the publication's editorial voice.
• Audience Engagement : Collaborate with the Director of Audience Engagement to ensure opinion content is tailored to engage and resonate with the digital audience effectively.
• Editorial Calendar : Develop and manage an editorial calendar for timely and relevant coverage of key topics and events.
• Collaboration : Foster collaboration with departments including Audience Engagement, Marketing, and Digital Production to maximize reach and impact.
• Community Engagement : Help plan and participate in community events focused on journalism and community issues.
• Quality Assurance : Ensure all content meets editorial and ethical standards and adheres to copyright, plagiarism, and fact-checking policies.
