License : Pathology Assistant (ASCP) certification required. Certifications : BLS, ACLS, or similar certifications preferred. Description : Pathologists Assistants perform gross processing of Operating Room and Clinic specimens, including photography, sectioning, and the completion of gross descriptions in surgical pathology reports. The workload varies based on specimen complexity and can range from minor excisions to complex multi-organ resections. Grossing cases can include complex and minor specimens, highlighting a diverse array of subspecialties such as Orthopedic, Client, ENT, Cardiothoracic, Gastrointestinal, Colorectal, Breast, GYN, and surgical oncology. Essential functions require comfort with utilizing a bone saw for procurement of bone sections. Candidates must be able to independently perform gross dissection, select appropriate sections for processing, and complete gross descriptions. Proficiency in communicating and answering questions from attending pathologists regarding gross dictation and section submission is essential. Candidates will ensure the use of techniques to prevent cross-contamination and maintain cleanliness within the pathology suite. There may be opportunities to interact with residents regarding basic grossing questions; however, there is no active role in their education. Support within the department includes supervisors, accessioners responsible for receiving and documenting specimens, and a dedicated team for excision and resection cases. Department-specific technology and equipment include electronic medical records and voice dictation systems. Preference is given to candidates with experience using specialized equipment such as bone saws and imaging machines used heavily in breast cases. Candidates should be available for scheduling Monday through Friday, with start times varying in the morning. No weekends or on-call shifts are required, and major holidays are closed. Scrub colors are specified as Caribbean Blue or surgical scrubs.
