About the College/Unit/Department

The Voice Area (https://music.uga.edu/voice) at the Hugh Hodgson School of Musicis a creative community that fosters a supportive environment for vocalists to explore a wide range of musical interests and styles in music, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations outside of music. The area supports students in UGA's undergraduate and graduate voice degree programs which include performance, music education, music therapy, music history, music composition, and the Musical Theatre Certificate Program. Our internationally recognized faculty have a broad range of expertise, performing and teaching multiple genres and vocal styles. Students are encouraged to think creatively and explore their own identities through performance of music of differing cultures, languages, and perspectives.

Position Summary

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music (HHSOM) at the University of Georgia (UGA) announces a tenure-track, assistant professor of voice search seeking a colleague to join a vibrant voice area with a strong national and international reputation. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure track appointment. Targeted start date: August 1, 2026.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an artist-teacher of voice, maintaining an active performance and research agenda that continues to expand the reputation for excellence of the program.
• Provide private and group voice instruction to students from first-year undergraduate through doctoral levels, including singing techniques for Western Classical singing as well as for the Broadway stage and other CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) styles. Lead weekly studio performance class.
• Assist in leadership of the Musical Theatre Certificate program, contributing to its management, overall vision, strategic plan, and future development.
• Instruct courses in related areas of expertise, which may include vocal literature, lyric diction, vocal pedagogy, or other courses as they relate to the candidate's expertise.
• Participate in activities related to the academic mission of the university and the voice area, including service on committees, student mentoring, and recruiting activities across the state and beyond.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

• Candidates without a terminal degree must document exceptional accomplishments as a professional performer and teacher, and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.

• Evidence of accomplishments in performance, with evidence of an established or emerging national profile, minimum of three years professional experience.

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching both Music Theatre/CCM and Western Classical singing, with a minimum of two years' experience at the collegiate level.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

• Specialized training in voice pedagogy for CCM styles, either as part of the terminal degree or through other programs (two graduate courses or the equivalent).
• Prior teaching of courses such as Musical Theatre history, Musical Theatre Repertoire/Styles, CCM Voice Pedagogy.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

• Understanding of current trends in musical theatre singing and career paths and a record of successfully guiding students in pursuit of performance careers in musical theatre.
• Demonstrated knowledge of a wide array of solo vocal literature for all voice types at different levels of academic study.
• Ability and desire to contribute to a dynamic, holistic music program that prepares students for a music career in the 21st century, including initiating and leading innovative community engagement projects in a region known for its music and arts culture.
• Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students and faculty.
