Made For Retail designs and develops innovative, trend-forward, impulse consumer products for some of the nation’s largest retailers. We bring creativity, precision, and efficiency together to deliver high-quality, trend-right designs that meet the needs of mass-market consumers.
We’re seeking a Freelance Designer to support our design team on a project basis. This role focuses on developing market-ready product designs and style guides aligned with retailer and brand expectations. Freelancers at MFR operate independently yet collaboratively, delivering exceptional creative output that meets defined project goals and timelines.
Scope of Work
- Translate retailer direction into mood boards, style guides, and product designs that become saleable, on-brand products retailers are excited to buy.
- Create prints, patterns, typography, and packaging layouts across multiple product categories.
- Maintain design accuracy, consistency, and brand alignment across all deliverables.
- Collaborate with internal teams (Creative Director, Design, Product Development and Account Management) to ensure designs are viable for production and meet cost targets.
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously while maintaining speed, attention to detail, and quality.
- Deliver all files using clear naming conventions and organized layers, prepared for the next phase of the process as outlined.
What You Won’t Do
This freelance position is focused on design execution — not internal or client management. You will not be expected to :
Attend or lead customer or company meetings.Participate in comp shopping or retail store visits.Mentor or manage other designers.Prepare or deliver client-facing presentations.Qualifications
7+ years of experience designing consumer products for mass retail (home, seasonal, kids, or similar).Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Procreate and Adobe Fresco. 3D design experience a plus.Strong understanding of materials, finishes, substrates, and packaging.Proven ability to take direction and translate it into clean, saleable, production-ready artwork.Portfolio required, demonstrating trend-right, commercial design work.Experience working with mass retailers or dollar / discount channels is required(ex. Target)Demonstrate history of modeling objectivity when receiving client & design feedback; strong ability to act upon constructive criticism efficiently and effectively.Ideal Candidate
