Job Description

Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, in a newly created role as the Neuroscience Director of Advanced Practice Providers. We are seeking a transformational, visionary leader to provide system-wide leadership of all neuroscience APPs and be a core member of the service line and section leadership team. You will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), which includes advanced practice nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) who participate in clinical service coverage models, RN First Assist (RNFA) and Certified RN Anesthesia (CRNA). This role functions as the primary resource regarding APP recruitment and retention, scope of practice, utilization and collaborative practice models, credentialing, orientation, competency, professional development, student placement and compliance.

The Director will provide leadership to APPs through excellent management, coaching, mentoring, and professional development, ensuring APPs are aligned with organizational mission, values, and goals. The Director will cultivate and foster an empowered and engaged workforce by establishing and maintaining a practice environment consistent with UCM’s commitment to patient- and family-centered care, new knowledge and innovation, team collaboration, and evidence-based practice. By building collaborative relationships with multiple counterparts and key stakeholders, including clinical home leaders, physicians, nursing, and administrative leadership, the Director will ensure the advancement of organizational goals, programs, and projects.

Reporting to the Vice President, Neurosciences Service Line, the successful candidate will be a strategic partner for the direction of neuroscience APPs. While developing and managing a neuroscience APP program that exemplifies best practices in the field, you will also have a unique opportunity to collaborate with other leaders across the enterprise.

Who you are:

A collaborative and strategic APP leader with:

  • Graduate of a formal advanced practice nurse, physician assistant, clinical nurse specialist, first assist or certified nurse anesthetist program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as an advanced practice provider.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a clinical leader.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant in the state of Illinois.
  • Licensed advanced practice nurse practitioners (NP), physician assistants (PA), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), RN First Assist (RNFA) and Certified RN Anesthesia (CRNA) in the state of Illinois.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse or PA controlled substance license in the state of Illinois.
  • Specialty board certification as a nurse practitioner with a major focus on adult care.
  • Completion of AHA Basic Life Support.
  • Completion of AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Prior experience managing large projects and working effectively in multidisciplinary groups.
  • Proven ability to lead change, organize teams and delegate effectively.

What you’ll gain as the Neuroscience Director of Advanced Practice Providers:

  • Opportunity to work at a world-class organization, engaging numerous stakeholders, with the mission of providing a strong vision and sustainable future for neuroscience services at the University of Chicago Health System.
  • Impact the lives of patients and their families with a relentless pursuit of achieving excellence and personalization in their care.

What you’ll do as Neuroscience Director of Advanced Practice Providers:

  • Collaborate with administrative and clinical home leaders to operationalize the infrastructure for APPs in order to successfully integrate APPs across the neuroscience service line.
  • Ensure APP inclusion in multi-disciplinary activities by chairing or serving as members of various committees that contribute to clinical care.
  • Participate in the Magnet designation process to ensure APP representation throughout the process.
  • Serve as an expert resource in the utilization and integration of established and emerging APP practice models across multiple venues of care throughout the enterprise.
  • Ensure that APPs receive effective feedback on performance and have actionable development plans, while determining opportunities for APPs to increase knowledge and skills aligned with their education, licensure and experience.
  • Remain clinically relevant by providing 20% effort in clinical practice.
  • Gather pertinent information systematically and skillfully from all sources: history, diagnostic tests, comprehensive physical examination, and psycho-social assessments.
  • Coordinate APP recruitment function and serve in an advisory capacity for job description development, hiring decisions, license and certification requirements and market sensitive compensation.
  • Identify internal and external benchmarks for evaluation of APP performance (billable and non-billable activities) and create systems to measure APP value through outcome and process metrics, as appropriate.
  • Educate and maintain relevant FPPE and OPPE processes and assist in establishing formal documents that detail scope of practice and privileges.
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation with the goal of improving the quality of care; participate in development, review and evaluate APP standardized procedures
  • Participate in research projects while identifying potential areas for oncology nursing research and integrate research findings into specialty practice.
  • Attain and maintain membership and active participation in professional organizations to keep knowledge base current.
  • Coordinate APP recruitment function and serve in an advisory capacity for job description development, hiring decisions, license and certification requirements and market sensitive compensation.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of the budget within established guidelines.
  • Foster efforts to positively impact the organization’s visibility, image, and relationship with its surrounding community.
