Who are we? An Introduction

Maui Humane Society is an open-air animal shelter for cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, and other animals in need of safe shelter. We provide veterinary and routine care and helping surrendered animals find a new home. We also provide humane law enforcement services, humane education and outreach, and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. Our team culture is creative, fast-paced, and collaborative and we are seeking problem-solvers who love animals and have great customer service skills. Day to day as a Pet Retention Specialist / 4EverPets

As a Full Time Pet Retention Specialist / 4EverPets at Maui Humane Society, you will play a crucial role in developing and updating community assistance initiatives aimed at supporting pet retention and reducing the need for pet surrender. This includes implementing food distribution and humane care education programs that help families overcome barriers to keeping their pets. You will provide ongoing support to both the Lahaina and Hana communities through regular food and supply distribution events, fostering long-term partnerships with other nonprofits to enhance collective efforts in promoting animal welfare. Additionally, you will develop community education programs that align with our mission, represent MHS at local events, and manage outreach initiatives designed to prevent pet relinquishment. Your involvement in fundraising and resource management will help sustain and expand these vital pet retention initiatives, ensuring a positive and impactful presence in the community while collaborating effectively with colleagues and volunteers.

A high school diploma is required, while a college degree is preferred. Proficiency with Google Suite, including email and Google Drive, is essential for effective communication and documentation.

A valid Hawaii driver’s license with a clean driving record is also required.

Familiarity with Hawaiian culture and a positive attitude will further enhance your effectiveness in this role. Experience in program development, social work, or humane training techniques would be advantageous.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are :

• Minimum Qualification Requirements :
• High school graduate
• College graduate preferred.
• Excellent computer skills
• Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills to include building alliances with schools and community organizations.
• Excellent public relation skills
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Professional in appearance and behavior.
• Possession of a valid Hawaii Driver’s license with a clean driving and criminal abstract.
• General Qualifications :
• Must have a passion for animals and support the mission of the Maui Humane Society.
• Must treat animals humanely with love and concern both on and off the job and transmit these values to others and must adhere to all local laws regarding personally owned animals
• General knowledge of pet behavior and care. Ability to work with all kinds of animals in a safe and responsible manner.
• Knowledge & appreciation for Hawaiian culture
• Positive attitude
• Additional Qualifications that would benefit this position :
• Advanced education focusing on social work or related field
• Prior experience / training in animal behavior and / or humane training techniques.
• Program development knowledge including being skilled in identifying new program ideas. Must have the ability to create visually appealing and informative educational materials and curriculum.
