Position Summary

The Department of Educational Studies at the University of Alabama invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor of Qualitative Research.

Detailed Position Information

This position is a three-year, non-tenure earning appointment. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in educational research (or in a related field with a specialization in qualitative methods), have demonstrated teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate level(s), and a strong potential to conduct high-quality research that leads to publication and contributes to teaching excellence

The Department of Educational Studies houses a flourishing educational research program that offers a PhD in Educational Research and both Qualitative and Quantitative Research Certificates for graduate students. The teaching load for this position is four (4) courses per semester with a service load designated to support leadership and coordination of programs in qualitative research (e.g., the certificate program in qualitative research). The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in qualitative research for all degree programs in the Department and College (doctoral, specialist, masters, etc.), with particular emphasis on the college’s rapidly expanding EdD programs. We are therefore seeking candidates with experience teaching to / with professional and practitioner audiences both inside and outside of online settings.

The position start date is August 15, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in educational research or in a related field with a specialization in qualitative methods (i.e., a minimum of 18 hours of graduate-level qualitative coursework);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of qualitative research methods and educational research design;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching introductory qualitative research courses for diverse student audiences and degree programs (e.g. PhD, EdD, Masters, etc.) in both online and in-person settings.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Demonstrated experience conducting and supervising “engaged” research in diverse / complex school-community and organizational conducts.
  • Ability to work with students and faculty in a variety of disciplines;
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement (e.g., publication).
  • Excellent writing and communication skills; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing a variety of perspectives in research and teaching
