Job Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Academic Advisor position! Academic Advisors work in a multi-disciplinary “neighborhood” team setting to assist students in planning for—and making informed decisions about—areas of study, intended college outcomes, and post-baccalaureate plans. Academic Advisors educate the whole student through a developmental advising approach and are charged with implementing advising strategies and interventions to enhance the performance and persistence of students throughout their time on campus. Academic Advisors help students assess their interests, values, and academic skills. They support students with long-term degree planning, course registration, and graduation timeline planning.Academic Advisors teach students to navigate the university’s academic systems, processes, and policies, and work with students to personalize their academic paths, including offering co-curricular guidance and referrals. In addition to one-on-one interactions, Academic Advisors work with students in group settings via workshops, presentations, campus events, and other engagement activities. Academic Advisors stay up to date on curricular requirements, academic policies, and opportunities in their areas of specialty and provide students with accurate and timely information and guidance to support exploration and academic engagement across the college. A successful Academic Advisor demonstrates an agile mentality, enthusiastic attitude, and passion for working with students and colleagues. Academic Advisors are highly relational and are comfortable engaging with students in one-on-one and large groups using a variety of outreach methods and in various meeting formats. Throughout all interactions, Academic Advisors consistently exhibit a student support orientation and strong communication skills. A&S Academic Advisors demonstrate a developmental advising approach that focuses on relationship building, exploration, academic goal setting, and success on an individual level.This advising assignment will support science students in one of the following areas: (1) environmental studies with additional physical science majors as needed; (2) biologies; (3) psychology and neuroscience.

While these positions are being hired to advise in one of the areas listed above, there is the chance that an advisor may switch to a different major or set of majors as needed, as student populations shift. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Student Facing Interactions:
  • Develop trusting, supportive relationships with individual students.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for academic questions and/or concerns.
  • Work with students through individual appointments, group meetings and presentations, registration labs, and drop-in hours via multiple modalities, including in-person, video conferencing, telephone, and email.
A&S developmental advising supports students to:
  • Personalize their academic path at CU Boulder;
  • Set intentional goals appropriate to their developmental stage;
  • Assess their interests, values, and academic skills to plan for and make informed decisions about a choice of major, intended college outcomes, and potential career and/or graduate school direction;
  • Review degree progress, graduation requirements, and graduation timeline planning, including graduation certification;
  • Navigate the systems, academic processes, and policies at CU-Boulder;
  • Learn about co-curricular opportunities that complement their academic path, goals, and support needs;
  • Reflect on their sense of belonging at CU and receive resources as needed;
  • Develop self-efficacy in college.
  • Ensure prepared and appropriately researched support and guidance for students that is customized to the student's context and developmental stage.
  • Proactively outreach and track students (i.e., early alert students, students who have not been in for an appointment, unregistered students, students in academic difficulty, students approaching graduation certification, etc.).
  • Lead group advising workshops and presentations, including topics related to new student orientation, academic exploration, academic enrichment, developing academic success strategies, registration support, etc.
  • Provide ad hoc coverage for peers as assigned.
  • Engage occasional evening/weekend hours to support A&S AAC, college, and campus programming as assigned.
Collaborations & Programming Support
  • Develop materials and support initiatives designed to provide a robust and comprehensive academic advising experience for students and colleagues.
  • Maintain detailed, accurate, and prompt records of all advising contacts in the advising portal.
  • Ensure highly collaborative working relationships with faculty partners to ensure understanding of curricula, departmental goals, career/research opportunities, and student success barriers and opportunities;
  • Liaise and create cross-campus relationships with the campus advising community and student support professionals.
  • Develop content and support the logistics coordination for advising events and student-facing experiences as assigned.
  • Serve on unit, departmental, college and/or campus-wide committees, task forces, and working groups as relevant.
  • Participate in unit, departmental, college, and/or campus events and programming initiatives as assigned.
  • Support relevant administrative tasks in service of the A&S academic advising program as assigned.

What You Should Know

Academic Advisors are required to adhere to the College of Arts & Sciences work modality expectations for student-facing roles. Currently, this includes the option of a hybrid work schedule that includes a minimum of 2 days per week on campus and will move to a minimum of 3 days starting Fall 2026. This can be subject to change based on the business needs of the department and align with A&S college policy. Academic Advisors are expected to attend all required in-person events and commitments

What We Can Offer

This position can offer a salary at the P1 or P2 level based on the requirements listed:
  • The P1 salary range: $50,000-$54,100.
  • The P2 salary: $55,500.

What We Require

Professional 1 Level Qualifications:
  • Completed bachelor's degree.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
Professional 2 Level Qualifications:
  • Completed bachelor's degree
  • 12+ months of related professional academic advising, coaching, or related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
