Purpose :
This AmeriCorps position will support the Blue Ridge Parkway's recovery after Hurricane Helene by helping the park assess field conditions, map damaged trails, coordinate trail work with field crews, overseeing and assisting field crews as appropriate, and monitoring trail restoration projects.
Description of Duties :
Data Collection & Analysis
Collect GPS and GIS-based field data to support digital trail inventories.Enter, clean, and manage trail data in agency databases and spreadsheets.Assist with mapping and analysis in ArcGIS or other geospatial tools.Produce summary maps, graphics, and reports for district staff and partner presentations.Safety and Compliance
Conduct safety hazard analyses of recreation areas; take or recommend corrective action.Patrol and monitor sites to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.Inspect and report on facility and site conditions, including visitor safety concerns.Visitor Engagement and Partnerships
Engage with visitors to share information on recreation regulations, opportunities, and safety.Support and coordinate with volunteers and partner groups involved in recreation or trail activities.Represent the National Park Service and CCNC professionally while maintaining a positive and helpful attitude.Planning and Implementation
Assist in developing and implementing operations and maintenance plans.Monitor trail conditions and usage to support sustainable recreation (data collection, photos, GPS points).Work safely in varied conditions, including inclement weather, with minimal supervision after training.Qualifications :
United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienAt least 17 years of ageHas received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education awardAgrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.GIS Software Proficiency - Foundational experience using ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or similar platforms for mapping, analysis, and data visualizationSpatial Data Management - Ability to collect, organize, and maintain geospatial datasets related to trails, natural resources, and infrastructure; familiarity with metadata standards. Able to adapt data management plans to account for new trails-related data sets.Field Data Collection - Skill in using GPS / GNSS units, mobile data collection apps (e.g., Survey123, Field Maps) to support trail inventories and condition assessments.Cartographic & Visualization Skills - Ability to design clear maps, graphics, and visual products for staff, partners, and the public.Communication & Teamwork - Effective at working with resource managers, maintenance staff, and partners to gather information and deliver GIS products that meet project needs.Interest in conservation, public land stewardship, and outdoor recreation management.Valid driver's license; insurable for agency / CCNC vehicles.Ability to work outdoors in rugged conditions and inclement weather.Strong communication skills and professional public contact.Self-motivated; able to work independently while following safety guidelines.Eligible for AmeriCorps service and able to pass required background checks.Trail Management Applications - Understanding of how GIS supports trail planning, condition monitoring, reroutes, and visitor use management.Database & Spreadsheet Competency - Ability to work with tabular data, link attribute tables to spatial data, and develop structured spreadsheets to track trail projects.Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills - Capacity to apply GIS tools (buffering, overlays, network analysis) to identify trail issues, evaluate alternatives, and support decision making.Our Commitment :

Time Requirements :
Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps serviceMember may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.Orientation and Training :

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
