Job Highlights :

This assignment is for the Ferndale Crew. The crews are responsible for inspecting and maintaining the roadways in their area. They are also responsible for roadside maintenance such as brush cutting and tree trimming and since they do not use chemicals pesticides or herbicides ditches have to be maintained by hand or machine. They assess repair or replace drainage systems such as ditches and culverts as these are an integral component of road maintenance.

Work Schedule :

  • Summer hours : M-Th 6 : 30 AM to 5 : 00 PM 1 / 2 hour lunch
  • Winter hours : M-F 7 : 30 AM to 4 : 00 PM 1 / 2 hour lunch

Under general supervision performs both routine and skilled heavy physical work in the maintenance repair and construction of roads; operates a variety of vehicles equipment and hand and power tools; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Road Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in this road maintenance series. Initially under close supervision incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in road maintenance repair and construction. This class is alternately staffed with Road Maintenance Worker II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher level class.

Road Maintenance Worker II is the skilled working level class in this series. Incumbents are expected to perform a wide range of general road maintenance duties. This class is distinguished from Road Maintenance Worker III in that the latter operates specialized heavy equipment such as graders low beds dozers gradalls and crusher equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Breaks and removes surfaces; digs shovels hauls and loads and unloads spoils sands asphalt mixes and other materials; operates jack hammers pavement breakers concrete saws spaders tampers and a wide variety of hand and power tools related to road maintenance work; shovels rakes rolls and irons asphalt and sprays oil; operates a variety of heavy trucks; sand seals surfaces; prepares for overlays; cleans up work sites upon completion of jobs.
  • Installs repairs and maintains culverts ditches and drainage structures; excavates and clears roads and ditches.
  • Performs traffic monitoring and control including the distribution of barricades warning signs safety cones and / or the flagging of vehicles.
  • Performs brush clearance tree removal and weed control work.
  • Operates a variety of light construction equipment such as dump trucks backhoes rollers loaders patch pots; may operate heavier equipment on a training basis.
  • Performs snow removal and storm patrol work.
  • Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cones and flags work sites to secure from traffic; uses appropriate safety equipment; observes safe driving practices.
  • Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance; reports the need for major repairs and service; fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment; washes and cleans assigned vehicles.
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignments.
  • Maintains basic records of daily work performed.
  • May train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs.
  • Responds to emergency situations in off hours as required.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    NOTE : The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.

    Knowledge of :

  • Techniques materials tools and equipment used in themaintenance and repair and construction of roads.
  • Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used inroad construction and maintenance.
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand andpower tools and equipment common to the field.
  • Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to thework.
  • Skill in :

  • Operating road equipment such as trucks rollers loadersand backhoes.
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power toolsand equipment used in the work.
  • Properly placing cones barricades and warning devices anddirecting traffic flow at job sites.
  • Performing heavy physical labor.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Exercising independent judgment and initiative withoutclose supervision.
  • Keeping accurate records and preparing simple reports.
  • Other Requirements :

    Must possess a valid California drivers license.

    Must obtain a Class B drivers license within 120 days for the I level and 30 days for the II level.

    Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to l00 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physical labor.

    Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions to work with exposure to traffic and to work overtime and off hours shifts in emergency situations.

    Desirable Education and Experience :

    A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is :

    Road Maintenance Worker I : Six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work.

    Road Maintenance Worker II : In addition to the above one year of experience in the construction and maintenance of roads at a level equivalent to the Countys class of Road Maintenance Worker I.

    PROBATIONARY PERIOD

    Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

    It is the Countys intention to hire only those workers who are authorized to work in the United States pursuant to the Immigration Act of 1990.     DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

    All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
