We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Sr EKG Tech.
In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing electrocardiograms on all in-and out-patients utilizing appropriate recording machines, including Holter monitoring. Performs Holder scanning duties and interprets arrhythmias from scanner. Trains new personnel.
Job Responsibilities :
- Prepares patients for testing. Gathers and sets up equipment and supplies according to established departmental procedures. Calibrates and warms up equipment prior to procedures, ensuring its proper functioning for procedures. Interacts with patients by identifying self to patient and verifies the identity of patient by checking the patients ID bracelet. Explains the procedure and equipment to the patient. Provides for patient privacy at all times. Preps patient using proper departmental criteria and technique to insure the best quality recording.
- Schedules patients, if necessary, and notifies floor for holter removals and applications.
- Provides training and technical guidance to new and current personnel. Orients existing employees to new procedures and / or changes in existing procedures.
- Teaches new employees establishing procedures. Remains available all duty hours to provide technical advice or assistance to junior personnel.
- Maintains scanning documentation according to departmental procedures. Prepares reports which include representative documentation of ECG abnormalities using standard nomenclature of nature and pattern sequence of abnormality. Makes verbal reports of ominous arrhythmias detected during analysis to physician. Completes documentation in a clear and timely manner.
- Reports poor quality tracings in order to improve hook-up techniques. Differentiates between normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms and uses deductive reasoning with ambiguous arrhythmias which includes sinus mechanism, sinus tachycardia, sinus bradycardia, sinus pause and arrest, sinus arrhythmia , SA block, wandering atrial pacemaker, supraventricular extra systoles (atrial and junctional) atrial and junctional tachycardia, conducted and nonconducted impulses, aberrant conduction, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, ventricular extrasystoles (unifocal , multifocal) ventricular bigeminy, interpolated VPCs R on T, late cycle complexes, fusion complexes, ventricular couplets and triplets, ventricular tachycardia, idioventricular rhythms, parasystolic rhythms, ventricular escape rhythms, ventricular flutter or fibrillation, first degree AV block, 2nd degree AV block (type I and II), 3rd degree AV block, high grade AV block, AV dissociation, ST elevation, ST depression, T wave changes, and intraventricular conduction defect.
- Performs all aspects of Holter monitoring scanning. Demonstrates familiarity with the effective operation of Holter recorders, operating principle of playback system, and basis maintenance of playback system. Demonstrates familiarity with various types of artificial pacemakers is able to recognize possible malfunctions. Utilizes techniques of high speed scanning including recognizing the effects of arrhythmias on various portions of the cardiac cycle during superimposition and using the ECG audio-reproduction in conjunction with visual inspection. Distinguishes artifact from actual ECG changes, and causes of the artifact. Utilizes the patient diary to correlate ECG changes with time, symptoms, and activities. Selects ECG strips which give representative documentation of each abnormality and appropriate documentation for correlation with any patient-reported symptom.
- Maintains equipment in proper functioning order. Interacts with Biomedical Engineering regarding resolution of problems with equipment. Cleans and prepares equipment for patient application. Sterilizes equipment after each isolation patient in accordance with nursing and departmental policy. Performs predetermined, preventative maintenance to ensure equipment is operating efficiently.
- Documents the electrocardiogram according to departmental procedures. Selects segment of electrocardiogram for documentation. Properly identifies patients name, lead placement, time, date, and if copy made on patient. Documents delivery of EKG by entering completion into System. Documentation is completed in a clear and timely manner.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of the electrocardiogram. Is able to identify normal and abnormal features, specially the recognition of various arrhythmias sufficiently to alert appropriate staff. Carries out assignment within realistic time frame. Removes electrodes and jelly, cleans patient and equipment. Assists patients with gown.
- Administers test by operating electrocardiogram to record and label various leads reflecting the electrical current emanating from the heart muscle. Operates equipment accurately and monitors course of procedures to ensure quality diagnostic results are obtained; makes modifications as needed. Assesses electrocardiogram by comparing it against established standards of practice and against previous electrocardiogram to monitor changes; alerts appropriate staff of any abnormalities that might need immediate attention.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
