Job description

Fire Prevention Specialist

The purpose of this position is to assist in a wide range of fire prevention activities aimed at protecting the safety and wellbeing of the community, such as assisting with fire inspections, conducting community education programs, and participating in data collection and recordkeeping. The incumbent will contribute to the implementation and enforcement of fire codes, safety regulations, and public fire safety initiatives.

Examples of duties include :

  • Assisting with basic fire inspections of commercial, residential, and industrial properties, ensuring that they comply with fire codes, safety regulations, and fire prevention standards; documents inspection findings and provides support during follow-up inspections for non-compliance issues.
  • Supporting the delivery of fire prevention and safety education programs to the public; helps organize and participate in community safety events fire drills, and public presentations aimed at raising awareness about fire hazards and prevention strategies.
  • Assisting with gathering, analyzing, and maintaining data related to fire prevention activities, including inspections, community outreach efforts, and safety violations; ensures that all records are accurately documented and organized for future use and compliance.
  • Distributing educational materials, fire safety resources, and informational pamphlets to residents, businesses, and community organizations; helps coordinate public safety campaigns and events that focus on fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
  • Providing support in monitoring fire code compliance, making sure that properties and businesses adhere to fire safety requirements; assist in issuing corrective notices and conducting follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with fire safety codes.
  • Assisting senior personnel in the planning, coordinating, and implementation of fire prevention programs; participates in the review and evaluation of program effectiveness, making recommendations for improvements.
  • Participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and other fire education activities; conducts fire safety programs, apparatus displays, and skills demonstrations; and conducts tours of fire station and fire trucks; and participates in community events and fundraisers.
  • Processing a variety of documentation associated with department / division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and / or hardcopy records.
  • Operating a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Gemesis, CAD, Target Solutions, word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Operating or utilizing various firefighting equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete assignments; operates and maintains communications equipment and personal protective equipment in hazardous situations.
  • Communicating co-workers, police personnel, local and state public safety officers, hospital personnel including doctors and nurses, fire and accident victims and their families, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include :

  • Education and experience : Requires a High School diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in customer service, public safety, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licenses or certifications : Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License. Fire Life Safety Educator certification is preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months. Fire Inspector I certification is preferred or must be obtained within twelve (12) months.
  • Special requirements : None.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities include :

  • Knowledge of local government operations, fire and emergency management related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, demonstrating a willingness to learn and grow in the field of fire prevention.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evening meetings.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work with and process payments for accounts within the budget and department.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting purposes.
  • Ability to operate a copying machine.
  • Physical demands include exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

    Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions; exceptions occur during response to major / critical incidents and may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, traffic hazards, bright / dim lights, toxic agents, animal / wildlife attacks or bites, explosives, or unstable individuals.
