Position Summary
This position performs skilled and semi-skilled work related to the maintenance, cleaning, and general upkeep of Town-owned beach accesses, shoreline facilities, and public beach areas. Responsibilities include daily cleaning, trash removal, facility maintenance, and ensuring that beach accesses, restrooms, and surrounding areas remain safe, attractive, and accessible to the public. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and requires physical effort, attention to detail, and adherence to environmental and safety standards. Employees in this role may also assist with general Public Works or Parks maintenance tasks as directed. Employees will be required to assist with weekend, special event, and holiday work as assigned.
Responsibilities and Reporting During an Emergency Situation : If assigned, employees in this classification will be required to report and carry out duties as directed for the duration of an emergency. Depending on the nature of the emergency, this may require working around the clock for several days on short notice.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Perform daily cleaning, maintenance, and inspection of beach accesses, walkovers, parking areas, and shoreline facilities to ensure safe and clean public spaces.Collect, bag, and dispose of trash, litter, seaweed, and debris from beaches, trash receptacles, and shoreline facilities.Clean and restock public restrooms, changing areas, and showers as assigned.Maintain trash and recycling stations along beach accesses and Town parks, ensuring receptacles are regularly emptied and in good condition.Inspect and perform minor repairs on beach access structures, walkovers, signage, fencing, and other beach infrastructure.Operate light equipment, utility vehicles, golf carts, blowers, sweepers, pressure washers, and hand tools for cleaning and maintenance work.Support the installation and maintenance of beach signs / signage, public information boards, and safety notices.Assist with sand removal, debris clearing, and restoration efforts following storms or high-tide events.Report maintenance issues, damage, vandalism, or safety concerns to supervisors for prompt resolution.Ensure all work is performed in compliance with environmental regulations, state laws and Town safety standards.Assist with Town-wide Public Works and special event setup, breakdown, and clean-up, including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.Prepare for and participate in storm preparation and recovery operations, including beach and access clearing.Safely operates light and heavy equipment in support of beach maintenance projects.Performs routine inspections on assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment; reports needed repairs and maintenance to supervisor.Monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials submitting the necessary documentation as assigned.Follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.Completes required documentation, logs, and reports for daily operations and vehicle usage.Provides support to Town-wide Public Works activities and may assist with facilities, parks, or grounds maintenance and project tasks as assigned.Assist with Town-wide Public Works requests to include night and weekend support for meetings and events.Performs weekend and holiday work as assigned.Attend all required training for operations.Attend all assigned meetings.Operates a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks as directed.Performs emergency response tasks and assignments as directed.Performs other duties as assigned.(These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. REQUIREMENTS :
Education, Certification, and Experience :
High school diploma / GED; one (1) year of experience in maintenance, groundskeeping, or custodial work preferred.Must possess a valid state driver's license and obtain a valid Florida Driver's License within thirty (30) days of hire or promotion.Working experience operating small machinery, utility vehicles, or landscaping equipment preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge :
Knowledge of beach maintenance procedures, cleaning methods, and environmental best practices.Knowledge of basic building, facility, and grounds maintenance techniques.Knowledge of safe work practices and proper use of tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment.Knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, and personal protective equipment used in maintenance work.Skills :
Skill in safely operating light motorized equipment, hand tools, and power tools used in beach and facility maintenance.Skill in identifying maintenance needs, safety hazards, and environmental issues.Strong attention to detail and ability to follow schedules and work plans accurately.Effective communication and teamwork skills with coworkers and the public.Ability to operate service vehicles, including pickup trucks, utility vehicles, riding lawnmowers, etc.Abilities :
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and follow written or verbal instructions while staying on task during scheduled work hours.Ability to safely operate tools, machinery, vehicles, and maintenance equipment in compliance with Town and OSHA safety standards.Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude throughout scheduled shift with all those encountered through the course of work.Ability to follow OSHA guidelines, Town safety standards and protocols, and applicable state laws regarding workplace safety and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).Ability to work the assigned schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to support Town operations, maintenance activities, and special events as assigned.Ability to maintain reliability, attendance, and flexibility in work scheduling.Physical Requirements :
The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and / or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.Tasks involve frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavy objects up to 100 pounds with the assistance of other employees and / or equipment as appropriate.Requires excellent eye / hand / foot coordination for operating standard and specialized electrical and gas operated equipment.Environmental Requirements :
