Position title :

Boyd Lab Research Specialists (Junior - Associate Ranks)

Salary range :

Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series. The UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year . A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000 - $88,000.

Percent time : Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start :

As soon as September 15, 2025. The degree requirement must be completed on or before August 29, 2025 for employment beginning on September 15, 2025 and beyond.

Position duration :

Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for research specialists. Under the direction of Assistant Professor David Boyd, the research specialists will contribute to a research program in viral immunology and lung biology investigating host responses to severe respiratory viral infections.

Duties will include maintaining mouse colonies and planning and performing experiments with mice, performing mammalian cell culture experiments, and managing chemical and biological inventories and safety records. The selected candidates will be expected to stay current with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals. This position will require excellent organizational skills and the ability to successfully work as a member of a interdisciplinary research team. Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply : an M.S. or M.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, virology, or a related field; expertise in mouse models of infection; expertise generating and quantifying stocks of viruses; and experience with flow cytometry and / or fluorescence microscopy.

B.S. or B.A. degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, virology, or a related field. It is anticipated that the degree will be completed by Aug. 29, 2025.

For applicants who do not possess the required degree when they submit their applications, they must document in their application materials (eg. CV, cover letter, etc) that their projected date for completing their degree will be on or before Aug. 29, 2025.

Experience using general molecular and cell biology techniques, such as : nucleic acid extraction and quantification, PCR / RT / PCR / qPCR, and mammalian cell culture.
