Description : The Pathologist's Assistant provides services in Anatomic pathology as a member of a team under the direction and supervision of a qualified Pathologist. Assists in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations. Assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen examinations. Responsibilities include gross description and complete dissection of surgical specimens. Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination, including frozen and permanent sections for light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy. Responsible for the accessioning of specimens and assuring proper identification of specimens according to surgical pathology policies. Prepares containers and tissue cassettes. Aids in resident training by offering technical instruction in accordance with practice guidelines. Assesses residents' competency in handling specimens. Responsible for gross photography of specimens as needed. Maintains files as assigned. Responsible for tumor procurement for biorepository. Completes documentation and quality assurance indicators. Aids in quality assurance and quality control plans of the department, primarily in areas of specimen identification and maintenance of instruments. Responsible for inventory and ordering of supplies for the surgical pathology lab. Selects gross tissue and extremities for disposal after report finalization. Performs autopsies, including external examination and dissection. Submits tissue sections and records data from examinations.
