Department Information

The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility, located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility opened in the 1960s as a satellite labor camp and has evolved to include secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program intended to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement. Our current programming maintains a community-based labor service and has expanded to include secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program intended to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the Central Transfer Process.

Position Description

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. CO I staff support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public, and work as a cohesive team to manage a diverse inmate population.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and / or vehicles
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
  • Monitor visiting areas
  • Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
  • Cross check and maintain movement logs
  • Conduct searches for contraband (may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
  • Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards
  • Inspect inmate mail and property
  • Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes) using established protocols
  • Follow tool and key control procedures; ensure proper storage and documentation
  • Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
  • Positions may require additional hours and shifts to maintain 24 / 7 safety and security.

    Minimum Qualification

    High School Diploma or GED certificate.

    Conditions of Employment

    Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States. CDOC uses e-Verify and does not sponsor non-residents. Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license; disclose prior terminations or resignations; have no felony convictions as specified; successfully complete a background investigation; pass health screening; complete all CDOC Basic Training modules including Defensive Tactics; and other requirements listed in the posting.

  • Computer skills and ability to document and communicate
  • Ability to perform searches and operate security devices
  • Willingness to use physical force as trained and to work in a locked facility under varying conditions
  • Ability to work all shifts, weekends, holidays and inclement weather
  • Drug testing and safety program compliance
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Bilingual; mentoring or volunteer experience.
