Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking an Associate Warden for the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp. This position is responsible for the administration, supervision, coordination, and monitoring of all programming staff assigned to the facility. Responsible for all programming phases, including staff and inmate orientation, direction, training, supervision, performance evaluations, and constant monitoring of the facility's programming plan. Manages the development of inmate programming and collaborates with staff regarding inmate classification / reclassification, programs, job assignments, program reviews, and the handling of minor and general disciplinary reports and grievances. The Associate Warden is an at-will employee and serves at the discretion of the Director of Corrections.

  • Directs all work activities in the division, program, or work system in the absence of an administrative superior.
  • Instructs, directs, and advises subordinate managers, supervisors, and others as appropriate.
  • Receives, discusses, and resolves questions and problems presented by subordinate supervisory or management staff regarding work processes, policies, organization, or methods.
  • Examines and evaluates methods in program management and operation; determines effectiveness in achievement of program objectives and goals, and compliance with policy.
  • Analyzes and evaluates work procedures, methods, and rules for a work unit.
  • Writes policy and operating procedures for a division or section of work system or agency, subject to guidelines and regulations set forth by superior and by laws and regulations;
  • Develops goals, objectives, and general activity guidelines for a work system, within a framework of general purposes, goals, and mandates set forth in law or policy and under the direction of a superior in the agency;
  • Attends supervisory or work system management staff meetings; gives and receives information, participates in problem-solving and decision-making; conducts and participates in in-service training and staff development programs for regularly employed staff.
  • Writes detailed reports based on research, investigation, or inquiry, in prescribed format or on established forms provided; examines evidence of law or regulation violation.
  • Makes analyses, evaluations, and determinations; recommends enforcement action; designs and constructs treatment programs for a treatment unit, section, or group (e.g., behavioral modification programming, establishments of positive peer culture or guided group interaction programs).
  • Counsels with individuals in accordance with individual treatment plans and specific methodologies and techniques; confers with other staff members, specialists, consultants, and members of the treatment or training team, discussing, planning, and determining courses of action in patient or client care, training, treatment, or case determination.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES :

Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of high-level supervisory experience in a correctional setting, including working as an Associate Warden or higher.

KNOWLEDGE :

  • Knowledge of unit management concepts, human relations, curriculum development, institutional health standards, corrections training programs, and implementation of such, inmate behavior, production inmate work, educational programming, and recreational programs.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)

    Experience :

    2-4 years of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Captain or Program Manager

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :

    REQUIRED : All candidates must have / or be eligible to obtain Certified Correctional Executive Certification within eighteen (18) months of employment.

    OR

    Education & Experience Substitution :

    5-7 years of progressive work experience in a Correctional Setting with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Captain or Program Manager

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :

    REQUIRED : All candidates must have / or be eligible to obtain Certified Correctional Executive Certification within eighteen (18) months of employment.

    Necessary Special Requirements

    PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Lifting / grasping up to 20 pounds without assistance on an occasional to regular basis
