Job Description

Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for an Arts Coordinator and Technical Director.

This is a 12-month full-time position with a variable schedule and supervisory responsibilities.

Under the supervision of the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, in coordination with Fine and Performing Arts Faculty, the Arts Coordinator and Technical Director is responsible for the design and execution of artistic lighting and sound needs for theatre productions, concerts, exhibitions, and other events in the McKenzie Fine Arts Center. Additionally, the Arts Coordinator and Technical Director works collaboratively and creatively with faculty, the Office of Student Activities, Facilities, and other stake holders to coordinate Arts Center scheduling, overseeing a 10-month season, currently at approximately 15-20 events per year. Work includes variable hours to meet the needs of events, supervision and training of Work Study students, and contributing expertise to ongoing improvements of arts facilities.

  • Bachelor's Degree or industrial certifications in Technical Theatre, Audio Engineering, Arts Management, or related Arts / Entertainment fields. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a conferred degree.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in lighting for the stage (traditional incandescent and LED) and strong working knowledge of sound reinforcement for the stage (instrumentation and vocals), and in working in educational, civic, or professional arts centers.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to safety regulations and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with multiple stakeholders and priorities.

  • Unique Competencies :

  • Technical Systems Integration – Knowledge of and experience with projection, streaming for meetings, and related multimedia technologies.
  • Safety Compliance – Knowledge and application of OSHA, industry safety standards, and venue-specific protocols.
  • Event Coordination – Ability to schedule, organize, and oversee multiple productions and events with overlapping timelines.
  • Delegation – Assign tasks effectively while ensuring accountability and quality control.
  • Collaboration – Work effectively with faculty, students, external clients, and technical staff.
  • Operational Flexibility  – Adjust work hours and schedules to meet event demands.
  • Serve as primary contact and technical supervisor for internal and external events in the Adray Auditorium.
  • Coordinate with appropriate college offices to ensure custodial, security, and other college coverage for all public events in the McKenzie Arts Center.
  • Train and supervise Work Study students to assist with events.
  • Provide lighting and sound design (or supervise student design work) for all events (including theatre and concerts) in the Adray Auditorium.
  • Provide lighting and sound support (as needed) to the Black Box Theatre and Sisson Arts Gallery.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance and safety of performance spaces and technologies.
  • Adapt weekly schedule to provide on-site support for events as needed.
  • Attend meetings with internal and external stakeholders as needed.
  • Advise and contribute expertise to ongoing arts facilities and technology improvements.
  • Develop positive relationships with college community to provide exceptional customer service to all College stakeholders (students, faculty & staff, community members, etc.).
  • Other duties as qualified and trained to perform.
