Police Sergeant

General Statement

Under supervision during an assigned rotating shift and in an assigned area, supervises the operation of the District's police force, including making work assignments, and updating and reviewing time records, efficiency reports and accident records.

• Schedules and supervises police officers, giving instructions in job duties and monitoring to ensure duties are performed in accordance with established rules and regulations. Includes camera footage review when required. Participates in hiring process. Gives oral and written reprimands and recommends suspension as required. Evaluates officers using the MWRD appraisal system. Grants days off and approves vacations.
• Ensures that equipment (weapons, vehicles, radios) and facilities are kept clean, in good order, and accounted for and that all policies and procedures are strictly followed.
• Issues offense / incident control numbers, classifies offenses / incidents, and approves offense / incident reports. Reviews officer's activity reports.
• Receives calls from operating personnel, other police agencies, police officers, and citizens. Investigates, assigns officers and grants approval to assist other agencies, or takes other action as appropriate.
• Utilizes the LEADS network for licenses, name checks, and criminal histories and responds to requests from other agencies. Monitors ISPERN (Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network) for information that is germane to the District. Assists officers on Patrol as needed.
• Creates a culture of positive attitudes and goodwill among personnel and strives for good public relations with various community agencies and citizens.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and / or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system. Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment, mobile phones, computers and cameras. Work is subject to video documentation and supervisory review.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two years (60 semester hours of credit) at an accredited college or university and four years of experience in law enforcement or military police service. Possession of a valid driver's license.

Substitution

Additional experience as a sworn law enforcement officer or as a member of the military police may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
