Special Education Aide
Currently, the requirements are a minimum of Level 3 scores on the following tests: Applied Math, Work Place Documents, and Business Writing. Previously, the required tests were Applied Mathematics, Reading, and Writing.
Qualifications:
- Must have a high school diploma or a GED and a minimum of 48 semester hours of credit from a four-year accredited college and/or university or an associate's degree from an accredited post-secondary institution, or
- Passed the Work Keys Test as mandated by the Alabama State Department of Education
- Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to observe and execute duties constant with that of the special education teacher.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to instructional procedures and other classroom activities.
- Possession of effective skills in both oral and written communication to assist and compliment the special education teacher in program implementation.
- Physical ability needed to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
- Be capable of moving and lifting moderately heavy weights.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed.
Essential Functions:
- Performs academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified special education teacher(s).
- Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach, when necessary, material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
- Works with individual students who need special attention.
- Assists in the guidance of independent study, enrichment work, remedial help, and follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).
- Assists the teacher(s) with students in rote memorization, reading and storytelling activities as appropriate.
- Assists the teacher(s) by checking student notebooks and daily written and oral assignments.
- Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties.
- Assists with preparing of instructional aids, bulletin boards and other learning displays.
- Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, break, personal hygiene/clothing needs, etc. as directed.
- Sets up and stores audio-visual equipment for classroom use.
- Escorts and supervises small groups who leave the classroom to do library work (under the supervision of the librarian).
- Assists with the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, physical education activities, off-campus excursions and testing.
- Maintains confidentiality of information as required by school policy.
- Maintains and exhibits a high level of ethical and professional standards as expected of all personnel.
- Participates in staff development activities and para-professional training as mandated by the State Department of Education.
- Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Terms of Employment: The terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy Manual, Students First Act and the Board's Salary Schedule Instructional Aide.
Evaluation: Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel - GCRK and GCRK-R.
