Position Summary

The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides clinical oversight, technical assistance, and skill development to program staff regarding all aspects of behavior support services. This position works collaboratively with staff, program supervisors, families, and other support providers in the delivery of behavioral services to individuals supported across day services. Provides oversight and supervises the Behavioral Support Technician.

Role’s Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and manages behavioral support services across adult day services.
  • Conducts individual functional behavioral assessments and re-assessments, interpreting results and designing ethical and effective interventions.
  • Develops and implements behavior support plans, behavior intervention plans, program plans (goals, on-going services, and special needs).
  • Monitors individual progress on an on-going basis, evaluates and adjusts interventions based on

review of outcomes.

  • Provides training and direct supervision to staff members as they implement behavior support and behavior intervention plans which enable individuals to develop skills in the least restrictive environment.
  • Ensures all day services behavior support and behavior intervention plans are reviewed with the treatment teams as needed, or a minimum of semi-annually.
  • Obtains necessary written consents for all behavior support plans which contain restrictive interventions; this includes the presentation of the intervention and related consents at the monthly agency-wide Human Rights Committee meeting.
  • For assigned individuals, and in collaboration with the residential behavior specialist, utilizes assessments and develops a unified, individualized plan to promote a comprehensive approach and consistent supports across a person’s life in both the day and residential programs.
  • Identifies, develops, and delivers training to staff at all levels, in areas related to behavior management, positive behavior intervention supports and applied behavior analysis.
  • Works with staff members on classroom management, designing and implementing program curriculum in a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports framework.
  • Manages and addresses challenging behavior as it occurs.
  • Participates in inter-disciplinary team meetings as appropriate.
  • Requirements

    Level 1

    Education / Certification

  • Master’s degree in a clinical or treatment field (psychology, social work, school psychology, applied psychology related to human development and clinical interventions) and documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development; or
  • National Board Certification in Behavior Analysis (BCBA) or New York State License as a Behavior Analyst (LBA); or
  • New York State license in Mental Health Counseling
  • Experience

  • At least three years of experience
  • Working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities, including developing, implementing, and monitoring behavior support plans; or Providing supervision and training to others in implementing behavior support plans
  • Alternative Path

  • Employed as a Level 2 Behavior Intervention Specialist at the master’s degree level for three years
  • Level 2

    Education / Certification

  • BCBA or LBA and a master’s degree in Behavior Analysis or closely related field approved by OPWDD
  • Alternative Education Path

  • Master’s degree in a clinical or treatment field (psychology, social work, school psychology, applied psychology, or related human services) or NYS license in Mental Health Counseling
  • OPWDD-approved specialized training or experience in functional assessment techniques and behavior support plan development
  • Experience-Based Path

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field and continuous employment providing behavioral services in the OPWDD system since December 31, 2012
  • Actively working toward a Master’s degree in an applied area (psychology, social work, special education) or completing at least one graduate-level course annually in an applied health service area
  • Master’s degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution or recognized by NYSED; foreign degrees require independent verification of equivalency
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

    Knowledge of :

  • Principles and procedures of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) (preferred)
  • Principles of Positive Behavior Support (preferred)
  • Behavior management and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA)
  • Skills and Abilities :

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Build interpersonal relationships and encourage participation in community activities
  • Supervise and train staff in behavior support practices
  • Collaborate with families, guardians, and professionals regarding individual plans and progress
  • Required Certifications

  • Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) certification or ability to obtain within the first month of employment
  • BCBA or BCBA certification (preferred or in progress)
